Making sure that Apple didn't further destroy file sharing with Sonoma

Before I update my lab to Sonoma, I want to make sure that Apple hasn't completely destroyed file sharing like the did with Ventura (where even the Apple expert on support had to get further support and I was on the phone with them for 6 hours). Does anyone have any issues with using file sharing and Sonoma? It really still doesn't work well with Ventura.

If you depend on File Sharing and are currently using it, do NOT update to Sonoma. There are Authentication problems (Files App on iPhone & iPad) when using file sharing. Oddly enough, the Guest account that uses no authentication works but you need to set folder permissions to allow all users read and write access.. totally hosed..

I did the same thing. When they go to connect to the server, EVERY user drive shows up in a list. Even though the permission is set to only each user and no one else, they are STILL able to mount the drive of anyone in that list and access it. Believe me, after 10 hours on the phone with Apple Expert Support, and even they don't know how to fix it.

I've done that. It still doesn't work. I used to be able to do this in 2 steps and now it is about 8 steps for each user.

It should be four steps for each user.

1) Add folder to file sharing.

2) Add user with Read/write (ok, that ends up being two).

3) Remove the group permissions

4) Set everyone to no access.

The admin should create the folders and there would be no need to change anything in the POSIX permissions.

If you added the student group to the folders in Finder, then you have given every student access to everyone else's folders.

I'm having all kinds of problems with file sharing. I have a 3 person operation, so I share files with 2 others. When I place files in shared folders, it can take days for the other 2 to see the files. We even logged into icloud.com, and that does not work either. At this point, I am having someone make a server out of a 2018 intel i7 Mac mini. But after reading some of the comments here, I'm afraid that will not solve the issue.

Do you have student files set up on it? If so, how do you keep each of them from accessing each others files and plagiarizing work? I have been working on a Mac since 1984, and had a server set up using Xserve and the Server app. When Apple stopped supporting the Server app, I had to use file share. It worked fine -- without students being able to access each other's work -- until Ventura came along. I was on the phone with support for 5 days straight with an "expert" trying to solve this. He couldn't even fix it for me. They can clearly mount each other's server file and peruse freely. Please let me know how you do this!!
