Where can I find drivers for HP printers compatible with Sonoma?

My old HP printer quit connecting with the new Sonoma 14 update on my I-Mac. After finding the HP community site it appears double jeopardy: Sonoma 14 doesn't work for HP printers and HP doesn't have drivers above 13. (Actually, I could only find 11.)

As statements on the net aren't always true, just wondering is anyones HP printer working on Apple after upgrading to Sonoma 14? If so, where did you find your driver, please?

Mine is by USB connection.

thanks!

Verify if your HP printer is AirPrint compatible. If so, add the printer using the Bonjour connection instead of using the drivers. Printer device drivers have been a problem with every update as they are either not updated by the manufacturer to support the OS or the manufacturer quits supporting the printers all together. This is true of all manufacturers and occurs on both Mac and PC's. The solution is to only use a printer that is AirPrint compatible, which most are nowadays. This eliminates the need for any printer drivers from the manufacturer and will solve the problem of the device not working after an update. I have the HP OfficeJet 5740 and it continues to work with Sonoma and uses AirPrint with no drivers from HP.

Thanks FlyingAppleFortress, your detailed description made me dig a bit deeper and I found a solution for my problem thanks to you, indirectly.

I executed your steps a few times without any positive result, but I also noticed that adding the printer through the macOS Printers & Scanners panel, generated a file called “HP_6970_Air.ppd” (“HP_6970_Air” being the name I gave to my printer) in /private/etc/cups/ppd. That did NOT occur when using the HP Easy Start software. Examining this file with a text editor, I discovered these 3 lines at the end of the file:

*APScannerUUID: "DF5BC5D6-3939-F1BF-D7B7-0C11C773A409"

*APICADriver: True

*APScannerModulePath: "/Library/Image Capture/Devices/HP Scanner 3.app"

But there was NO HP Scanner 3.app in /Library/Image Capture/Devices/ !!!!

When I looked in my old MacBook Pro running Sierra I found that the same PPD has a different path and file for what I assume is the scanner driver:

“System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/AirScanScanner.app"

So I checked on my Macbook Air M2 and lo and behold, the AirScanScanner.app file was also present in the same location.

I then edited the “/private/etc/cups/ppd/HP_6970_Air.ppd” file to included that same line at the end and Presto! my scanner worked again.

Now, a word of warning, my recall of the steps might be a little troubled and I might have executed some other steps in between or repeated one or two a few times, like rebooting and emptying the bin, but the end result is that

  1. there exists a “/private/etc/cups/ppd/HP_6970_Air.ppd” file and
  2. the last line in that file says *APScannerModulePath: "/System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/AirScanScanner.app" and
  3. there exists a “System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/AirScanScanner.app” file.

So if you can somehow make these conditions true, you should be good, like I am now, after 3 days of swearing and hair pulling. If you want to try this, subsitute “HP_6970_Air” for your own printer name of course.

Good luck

After steps 1)-4) I could print again. But not scan. Then I tried steps 5) & 6)

But when I deleted the printer and added it again it was the same as before.

But my problem with a network connected LaserJet Pro 500 is different: I can start a print job. The job shows up in the print cue but the cue goes immediately in a "halted" or "waiting" state (using German macOS - don't know how this is translated in English) from which it never recovers.

My workaround: Save document as pdf in iCloud and print from iPhone with the current OS. Works, but is not what I think is a good workflow.

The printer worked perfectly for many years until Sonoma came.

Apple needs to fix it!!!!

Someone any ideas?

I've got a really old HP P2015 printer but it stiil works well and I'm determined to get more miles out of it. I experienced the same issue when I bought a new MacBook Air M3 with Sonoma for my wife. There is a simple fix, at least for this simple printer: don't use the HP device-specific driver. When you add the printer, in the "Use:" dropdown, select Generic PostScript Printer. You'll get a warning that you "may not be able to use all of the features" of your printer but you should be able to print. Not upgrading software is a common ploy among tech companies to "encourage" customers to buy new hardware. Apple blaming HP for this issue is, at best, ironic.

I too have a new MAC os Sonoma 14.5 and it Won't work with my old and faithful,HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer, which has been the best workhorse printer I've ever had!

I've tried the remove and add printer etc, that many mention and it still refuses to 1. print in color 2. Scan. So I can't continue this time effort of a hack around and now looking for suggestions of model to Replace w/ compatible printer for my MAC. Many thanks ....

I followed instructions found via this link.

Downloaded this from Apple:

HP 5.1.1 Printer Software Update

Somewhere in between, had to also download Rosetta to enable Intel software to run on newer silicon chip.

After downloading the above printer software update, I was able to install the HP printer and it found the driver successfully.

Still can't get it to scan though. If anyone else had success getting an HP All in One to scan properly, please do share.

I'm in the same boat. Great printer, ethernet connected, and shared with 5 users in the home. So far, it does work with Sonoma as a generic Postscript printer. I'd replace it, but I just replaced all 4 toner cartridges, so we have to recover that investment first. Honestly, HP is in the ink and toner business. Why wouldn't they create drivers to encourage me to continue buying toner at $125 a pop?

But AirPrint printer doesn't support the full range of features such as duplex printing. So to use the full range of features, you have to use the non-airprint driver from HP directly.

For me, I managed to track down the bug on the HP Easy Start app. It required the Rosetta drivers which wasn't installed default on Sonoma. How I discovered the bug was that I downloaded the printer driver package "hp-printer-essentials-B-5_17_5_2.pkg" from HP directly.

You need to find the location of the ftp server from a log file in your library: ~/Library/Logs/HP Easy Start.log

For me, the URL is:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/macOS12/hp-printer-essentials-B-5_16_5_7.pkg

Once the package is downloaded, you can run the package, and you will be prompted to install Rosetta if it's not installed.

Actually, after Rosetta is installed, you can go back and run HP Easy Start without any error.

(?)

I see at least 1,500 HP printer listed in Airprint

It is impossible to speculate on which "My old HP printer..." you might be referring to.

Are you able to use Image Capture in your Applications folder for scanning?
