Microsoft makes versions of the main Microsoft 365 / Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for Macs, as well as for PCs. So you don't need to install Windows just to run Word.

Note that M1 and M2 MacBook Airs cannot run the regular Intel version of Windows. They can run Windows 11 for ARM in a Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion virtual machine. That version of Windows has some support for running off-the-shelf Windows/Intel applications using emulation or translation – but there is some overhead, and there are limitations.

How old is your laptop? You can install word via the App Store but you need to run macOS 11.0 or newer in order to use it

Want to keep checking Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Word in the Mac App Store Compatibility as its Fall and about time for Microsoft to drop Big Sur from the supported operating systems now that three newer versions are out.

Which do you want? Or is it both? Windows OS and Word app installations are two entirely different evolutions
