Microsoft makes versions of the main Microsoft 365 / Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for Macs, as well as for PCs. So you don't need to install Windows just to run Word.


Note that M1 and M2 MacBook Airs cannot run the regular Intel version of Windows. They can run Windows 11 for ARM in a Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion virtual machine. That version of Windows has some support for running off-the-shelf Windows/Intel applications using emulation or translation – but there is some overhead, and there are limitations.
