iphone 'wait minutes" without a passcode entry or open attempt

Hi,

My phone [13 mini, with current updates and OS. has been a great phone ] was in my pocket while working outside. I heard it calling out to someone, took it out of my pocket, it was ringing the first number in my contact list. I left them a message and then the phone said that it wasn't available. ? I had never seen this screen before.

Some research showed that the phone had "locked" from too many wrong passcode attempts ! I guess it was trying to open itself just from being in my pocket while I was moving around?

I turned the phone off, waited, back on with the same screen. I turned off again waited, and did the hard restart with the volume control pattern, same result.

Lastly, I left the phone ON, waited and after the 15+ minutes it allowed me to open it with pass code, normally.

Sigh, I hope this story can help someone else. Leave the phone on !

thanks

Your skin contact through your clothing activated the screen on your phone, and mis-entered your lock code.

If you routinely carry your phone in your pocket (not a good idea for a ~$1,000 piece of delicate electronics unless it is in a protective case) you need to do 2 things:

(1)Go to Settings/FaceID & Passcode and turn off Raise to Wake.

(2)Put the phone in your pocket with the BACK against your body so skin contact doesn’t activate it. This may seem counterintuitive, but it is more important to protect the back than the front; a screen can be replaced, but if the back glass breaks the whole phone must be replaced.
