Custom Transparency Mode Keeps Turning Off

Custom transparency mode continues to turn off randomly. I have to go into “audio visual” in settings, then “Headphone Accommodations” then scroll to the bottom and turn on “transparency mode”. In this menu are the settings for adjusting external sounds. The transparency mode toggle button here keeps turning off! I’ve reset the AirPods, reset the settings several times but nothing seems to work. Please advise.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem - It makes the Airpods Pro 2 pretty useless as hearing aids!

I've tried everything. I'm on iOS 17.4 and this update didn't fix it, in fact it seems to have made this issue more frequent.

I thought I'd got this solved for a while, as it seemed I didn't have to do anything to keep them transparent, but alas, the nightmare is back and I'm now constantly having to turn transparency accommodations on again after spontaneously having them not work. Apart from sending Apple feedback, my only real suggestion is to just keep trying: every time it turns off, turn it on again, and maybe there will come a time when it sticks. But it's completely unpredictable and frankly I think this can only be a software issue in iOS, not the AirPods themselves.

Good luck.

This problem has started last year. Then after one of the updates it disappeared until the next iOS update. It started again. It lasted for 2-3 months and the new update fixed it. I was afraid to update when the new iOS showed up. I took a chance, and guess what…. It went a back to dropping. Apple support and senior advisor do not have the AirPods Pro, that’s what they said, And that’s why they do not know what you were talking about. I hope the next iOS update will fix this problem, because AirPodsPro are the best in transparency mode.

It is random; there's simply no way to know whether you'll be affected. Just now, I'm not affected, but that wasn't the case yesterday, or last week. And since it can happen at any time, you can't preempt it by trying to turn it on ahead of time, toggle it off and on, etc.

Please just write to accessibility@apple.com (it is an accessibility-related feature, after all) and let them know how sad this makes you.

They are not hearing aids for people who lost their hearing by over 70%, but they are tremendously helping people who lost 40-50%. And that's why I purchased 2 pairs? Mine has worked perfectly since iOS 17.3. It used to drop all the time before this update. I am skeptical about updating to iOS 17.4, as I do not want this to happen again.

Custom transparency mode went back to "normal", disconnecting many times per day. Especially if I listen to some songs on my iPhone.

What is amazing is that when custom transparency mode is set, and I hear perfect, if I turn off the phone the AirPodsPro continues being in the custom without disconnecting.

The iPhone might send some Bluetooth signal that disconnects the transparency mode. That's all I can think of.

Most likely, Apple developers do not use the transparency mode, or they do not have AirpodsPro, otherwise, this issue would have been fixed a long time ago.

Yes I use them as hearing aids too and the amplification cuts out randomly. So frustrating. Right in the middle of conversations. Makes Apple look wonderful when Im teaching and have to stop and go through the seven step process to turn it back on.

i’ve told all my other devices to connect only when last connected. I’ve called Apple support multiple times on this and no one has any idea what I’m talking about. have even brought it up at the Apple Store twice

please fix this now, Apple. This will cost you customers.
