Reset my iPod classic 2nd gen with Disk Utility, now it shows a file icon with an exclamation mark, please help !!!

I recently got an iPod classic 2nd gen, and when I plugged it into my computer with a third party FireWire 400 to FW 800 cable to my 2012 MacBook Pro running Catalina, both Finder and Apple Music would show a loading logo and then "The selected device could not be found" after a few minutes. The iPod was fully working before connecting it to the computer. Then I used disk utility to reset it (using the MacOS extended option), however when it finished resetting the iPod, it showed a file with an exclamation mark. I also tried resetting it again but with the security option:

[This option writes a pass of random data and then a single pass of zeros over the entire disk. It erases the information used to access your files and writes over the data 2 times.]

However, it still displayed the file icon. I can't restore the iPod's operating system either, because when I reconnect the iPod to the computer, it still shows a loading logo and does not connect to the iPod. (hence why I reset it in the first place)

When I first got it it was in Windows Format if that helps, and I also tried the usual troubleshooting steps such as waiting for it to charge

I don't really want to replace the hard drive because the postage for it is very expensive as I don't live in the US. The iPod worked fine before and I don't think a simple reset of the hard drive can cause it to break. Is my iPod permanently unusable now or is there still another way to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated 😊
