Message icon badge

The first step into fixing this issue would be to disable the Badge App Icon setting on your device, restart , and then enable the Badge App Icon setting again.

To do this, you can go to Settings > Notifications > Messages. Then, tap the option to disable the Badge App Icon setting, and restart: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

Once the device is on again, go back and enable to app badges in settings.

Applied the above steps, it worked :)

After restart and turning on notification, i was able to see unread messages. After reading those badge went away.
