Troubles copying photos from iPhone 13 Pro to PC

I'm trying to copy my iPhone (13 pro - iOS 17.0.3) pictures to my external drive through my Windows 10 laptop but I'm finding several difficulties. Specifically, I want to copy the files as they appear in Windows File Explorer (.jpg and .mp4 for live photos).

My workflow consists of:

  1. connecting with lightning cable smartphone and laptop (no USB adaptor it's in use since the laptop already has a type c)
  2. allowing file sharing on iPhone pop up message
  3. opening the iPhone drive in Windows File Explorer
  4. copying one folder at the time

The issue arises after a few copied folders, when I notice that, either not all files have being copied (no warning message on any of the devices), or they have being copied but they have significant difference in size (sometimes half the size, sometimes they end up being close to 0 KB). If I try to repeat the copying process, I end up again in the same situation.

I already tried to:

  • disconnect and reconnect the devices
  • copy small sets of files instead of the entire folders
  • copy files or folders to my local laptop drive and then move them to the external drive

Nothing seems to really improve the situation.

I know what are the "standard methods" for media transfering but I'd like to obtain both the .jpg and the .mp4, something that, as far as I can tell, it's not possible with them.

I already have all my files backed up on a paid iCloud plan and on my local drive with iTunes.

I'd really appreciate if any of you could help me with this issue.

Many thanks in advance,

Matteo

Hello mattminho,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities, it's great to have you here.

We'd like to share some resources with you that should help in transferring files between your iPhone and your PC. You mentioned being familiar with the standard method of transferring photos, so these resources may already be familiar to you. However, since these are the only support methods for transferring photos between those devices, we want to share them to help you get this resolved:

If this information doesn't do the trick, you may want to consider reaching out to Apple directly. If support is available in your region, this will let you work directly with an AppleCare Advisor who specializes in resolving this exact type of issue. You can begin by reaching out here: Get Support

We hope that this information gets everything working again.

Many thanks!

I had a similar situation where I was trying to copy a folder with pictures and movies from iphone to win11 laptop using lightning cord. The copy would start and then about 1/3 through the process it would abruptly crash. By comparing the contents of the copied folder I found the last photo that was copied then on the phone deleted a few ahead and a few behind. Restarted the copy - it made it a bit farther (perhaps 2/3 through) and crashed again. I used the same method and deleted a few at the point of crash and eventually get the entire folder to copy.

I then noted that ios 17.5.1 has fixes for photo library - wondering if this will help improve the situation....
