How much space is required to backup an iPhone with 121.15GB of data on it to a macbook air?

I've tried several times to backup my iPhone SE to my macbook air. First I was told the iPhone was disconnected and then I was told that there was not enough storage space on my laptop which has 254.48 of 494.38 GB of storage available. That leaves 240GB available 2x the total data on the iPhone. Don't the latest backups take the place of the previous back-up? Please help. The only other posts are from 2016 and it gives solutions for iTunes, but that's no longer how the iPhones are backed up. I cannot find any current information. Thank you.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.4
