several issues after update to Sonoma 14.0

Disable "Full Keyboard Access" in System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.

OK - am back. But not quite that simple.

I upgraded to 14.2. This took a long time (>8 hours) before it was installed, and the MacBook Pro was unusable. Would just continually try rebooting and go nowhere. Did my head in, had a few more beers and went to bed.

Spoke to Apple the next day who put me in touch with the authorised repairers. They were busy for a week but advised that it was a hardware issue and they could confirm after a half hour or so whether it would be worth fixing or not. I was to bring my laptop in the following week and they would get to it, as well as bring any backups in case they needed to go from scratch.

I've committed a few days by this stage so after sleeping on it figured I've got nothing to lose by formatting the drive and restoring from the backup, as that sounds like what they're going to do and charge me for the privilege, but add a few more days on. So I erased the drive, started from scratch with 14.2, then loaded in from the backup.

I'm now 5 days since, and touch wood it hasn't missed a beat. Normally it would have called to be rebooted at least a couple of times by now. I'm still hypersensitive but I can search in safari, the date/time hasn't switched itself for no reason, apps all seem to work, etc.

The only issue I did find was that I had a bunch of hard drive (~70%) eaten up by System Data, the large majority of which was access to OneDrive from an employer. Apple helped me with how to disconnect that to free my hard drive once more. Not sure how/why it did it in the first place.

Not sure if this will help others. This was my hail mary as to whether I leave Apple behind after a long and mostly happy relationship. At the moment, we're working through our differences...

ok fixed this by finding and deleting a corrupt Finder PLIST file (Open Finder > ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist > look for and move to trash "com.apple.finder.plist").

That was after the usual recommended "fixes"

1. Restart Your Mac
2. Relaunch Finder
3. Check Your Finder Settings
4. Rebuild the Search Index

Have just been in contact with Apple - they assure me that upgrade to latest version (14.2) will resolve at least the major issues. Trying it now and will be back if it doesn't help...

Further update - one month later after reformatting and loading the new OS from scratch I'm not suffering any unusual problems other than overheating. So I'd suggest that's the safest option for those having issues, and a much better option than buying new hardware

UPDATE:

After finally being able to run the update to 14.2 my whole Macbook became unusable. Couldn't even boot to safe mode. Sent it back and they told me the motherboard is hosed. Complete disaster. OS that should have never been released and poorly manufactured hardware. And for this we pay such a premium? Apple has lost the plot. Since sending it back I've switched my work machine to Linux Mint.

My experience is of an usuable 2019 Intel MBP after upgrading to Sonoma. Everything very slow to load. Among other issues the animated wallpaper was causing CPU to max out all the time. I always close my Mac on a Friday evening and put it in my bag to take to work on Monday. Saturday morning the bag was warm. Fans spinning full blast on the Mac - it was absolutely roasting and very unhappy - no idea why it woke up when closed. It had never done anything like that before.

The only remedy was to reinstall machine to Monterey 12.7.4. I had a backup of my most important stuff and wiped completely. It's run perfectly ever since. I have a personal M1 Air which I imagine will be fine when I finally upgrade to Sonoma, but I'm in no hurry to do that.

No warranty. Sorry. Please use your Time Machine Backup to restore your last OS.

BTW: Apple always recommends to make a fresh Time Machine Backup before you update to a new MacOS.

so there is no warranty that your individual configuration is properly working under the new OS.

I ended up getting a genius bar appointment regarding this matter and Sonoma's affect on my wife's 2019 Mac Book Pro. I had had it after 2.5 hours with chat people and stripping the computer of Sonoma and data, reloading Sonoma and migrating data back on from a backup. The tech rep we met with was excellent. I gave him a five star review. Unfortunately, he was equally stumped about what was going on after going through several possibilities causing the bugginess. Laughingly, when we took the computer in, it was working far better on Sonoma than our experiences at home. **** computer behaved when we were there! But he did believe us and feels that updates of Sonoma and time will work things out. It seems the Mac is more stable now with some of the bugginess gone - but not all. On my 2018 Mac Book Pro, I'm not moving from Ventura for a long time or until the bugginess is worked out.

I suspect some of this might come from older files. Back in the Old Days of rebuilding your desktop file (now you just trash your apple.com.finder.plist.

I would also delete my cache these get corrupted fairly easily, take up space and while they are designed to "speed" things up, they are like 100 racers for the next race wandering all over the track where the racers of This Race (what you are doing now) are running.

Also, I went in and trashed everything in my preference files Finder>Go (hold down Option key to see the hidden) Library

Find Preferences and delete everything inside. This will be slightly annoying but often earlier set preferences (whoops I forgot they are called Settings) but the folder is still called preferences.

You will need to log in to some things, set some of the preferences but 12.5 OS preferences can have problems with 13.0

Additionally, do the same with Cache files.

Finally, rest the SMC and PRAM different for different models, then boot to Safe mode and restart while setting PRAM again and finally restart again., yeah a third of 4th time I lost count

Most of the time this will fix things but xx.0 is not really a fully vetted system. All you inexperienced users are...helping we older and wiser users, we all thank you very much. 8-D

This is often the result of having Full Keyboard Access turned on in your Accessiblity settings by mistake. Make sure it is turned OFF. It's been reported here dozens of times, let us know if that helps.

Make sure you are in the correct keyboard. Upper Right. I was in an ABC- AZERTY Keyboard after update so my password was incorrect when entered.

My wife's three year old MacBook Pro is so screwed up after updating her computer two days ago to Sonoma. For example, you can't get the computer to shutdown unless you press the power button. Other commands are all screwed up. What is going on?

Our 2019 MacBook Pro has never had an issue until going from Ventura to Sonoma. Now, there are so many bugs. For starters, certain functions don't work because the menus don't appear. For example, click on "Shut Down" and the "Shut Down" menu won't appear on the screen. Move file drill down menu doesn't work. There is such a delayed response to every function. Computer has become unusable. I've tried going to the Apple site for instructions on how to reinstall Sonoma via MacOS Recovery and followed directions. It took almost four hours and after it was done, I got the same MacOS Recovery menu on the screen as if the download never happened. Next step is to take it into the Apple Store because I'm at the end of my ability to figure this out and would prefer going backwards to Ventura.
