Latest iTunes (WIndows 10) v 12.11.7 unable to open library and fails secure link to iTunes store

In Windows 10 (most updated OS), my latest iTunes application (version 12.11.3.17) stopped acquiring a secure link to iTunes Store. Two uninstalls and reinstalls of iTunes and two winsock resets failed to resolve the issue. Resetting the ipconfig on command prompt also failed to fix the problem.

I even made sure only Windows Defender was active, after disabling MalwareBytes (an application). The problem started in earnest after I changed my Apple ID password. iCloud on Windows and Mac accepts the new login, as well as Music on a separate Mac and Music on my iPhone 8 Plus. After the last reinstall, iTunes v 12.11.3.17 tells me it's unable to open the library because it was created with a newer version of iTunes, which is impossible.

Unless I can find a fix for my Windows 10-based iTunes, I suppose I can just live with my Music app (iTunes Match enabled) on my Mac computer.

Windows, Windows 6

The latest version of iTunes (on the day of writing this and on 12th October, when you started this discussion), is 12.12.10.01.

iTunes 12.11.3.17 is more than two years old, released on 22nd April 2021. Since then, I think there have been twelve updates to iTunes. I recommend that you update to 12.12.10.01, which should overcome that particular issue.

It is possible that a corrupt preference file may cause iTunes to fail at launch with one of these errors:

  • The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
  • The folder “iTunes” is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder.
  • The iTunes Library.itl cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the 'iTunes' folder in the 'Music' folder.

It may be worth trying the shift-start-iTunes method (option on a Mac) to actively select the .itl file that should contain your library. If you still get the error message try Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows and/or check for interference from anti-virus software.
