To update over the air from the phone all of these requirements must be met:

  • To update over the air from the phone all of these requirements must be met:
  • You need at least 10 GB of free storage for iOS 16 and later or 6 GB for iOS 15 or lower; more is better
  • You must be connected to a Wi-Fi network (and not a personal hotspot) unless it is an iPhone that supports cellular 5G (12, 13, 14, 15 or SE 3rd edition) and has a 5G network connection
  • The phone must be charged to at least 50%, and preferably plugged in so it stays above 50% during the update
  • The phone must not be in Low Power Mode
  • The phone must not be connected through VPN, and it may be necessary to delete any VPN apps and VPN profiles
  • The phone cannot be in Airplane mode and must have a cellular data connection
  • You cannot still have a beta of a previous version installed on the phone
  • You cannot have a previous version that was downloaded, but not installed - go to Settings/General/iPhone Storage to look; if you find an iOS installer, delete it

If you can't meet all of them you can still update using your computer.

What is happening when you try to install it? Make sure to connect to a wifi network and to turn off low power mode. If the iPhone is still not updating please update via a pc or Mac instead

Update your iPhone using a Mac with macOS Catalina or higher

On a Mac with macOS Catalina or higher, you will use the finder in order to upgrade your iPhone. Make sure to Back up your device before starting the upgrade process.

On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, you will follow the following steps:

  1. Open a finder window
  2. Connect your device to your Mac via a lighting to usb A or a lightning to usb c cable On the iPhone 15 series, use an usb c to usb c cable.
  3. Select your device in the left sidebar of the finder window
  4. click general, then click check for update
  5. Click download and update.
  6. If asked, enter your iPhone passcode

Update your iPhone via a Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier, or on a Windows PC

On macOS Mojave or earlier, or on a windows machine, we won't use the Finder to upgrade your iOS

Instead, we will use iTunes. Make sure to Back up your device before doing any update or upgrade to your phone.

  1. Open iTunes
  2. connect your device to the computer with an lightning to usb a or a lightning to usb c cable. On the iPhone 15 series, use an usb c to usb c cable.
  3. Click device button in the iTunes toolbar
  4. In the summary tab, click check for update
  5. Click download and update, follow The on screen instructions
  6. If asked, enter your iPhone passcode.

I was able to upgrade to the latest version of software after using the Microsoft Store to update my version of iTunes. You cannot get the latest version of iTunes compatible with Windows 11 through Apple. It actually is available through the Microsoft store. Once iTunes is updated, you can then plug your phone in through the computer to update it to the lastest iOs version.

I found a solution that will work for most without going into the Apple Store, what I did was update the phone from my Mac those of us that have a Mac should have no problem from that point, it will prompt you for information a few times but that’s about it, after that I ran the updates again since the software is updated the install will go right pass that screen and into the transfer from old phone or cloud. Hope this helps someone

I have iPhone 15 Pro Max and cannot upgrade to IOS 18. My old iPhone did, so now I cannot transfer my data. That is ridiculous.

You were running a beta version of ios 18 on your old phone. You need to enroll the new one in the beta program if you want the ios 18 beta on it. you can not restore a backup made on a newer version of ios to a device running an older version.
