An Early 2015 MacBook can be upgraded as far as Monterey (macOS 12.*), but no further.

How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

That should be far enough to manage recent iPhones. If you assume that the version of macOS needed to manage an iPhone is based more on the version of iOS the iPhone runs, than on the particular iPhone model, then

  • A Mac needs to be running El Capitan 10.11.6 or better to manage an iPhone running iOS 16 (reference: iPhone 14 - Technical Specifications – that phone first shipped with iOS 16).
  • A Mac needs to be running High Sierra 10.13 or better to manage an iPhone running iOS 17 (reference: iPhone 15 - Technical Specifications – that phone first shipped with iOS 17).

Upgrade your iPhone from iOS 16 to iOS 17 (assuming that it qualifies), and you may find that an old Mac running El Capitan or Sierra is suddenly no longer able to manage that iPhone. Or that a Mac that was running High Sierra and iTunes 12.8.3 needs a new version of iTunes: 12.9.

Note that if you upgrade to Catalina or later (Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey),

  • 32-bit applications will stop working
  • iTunes will go away, replaced by separate apps: What happened to iTunes? - Apple Support . You'll now use the Music and TV apps to manage your albums, movies, and TV shows – and the Finder to manage your iPhone.
