New as of iOS 17 I have a new “feature” of predictive text appearing in line with what I’m typing, and blocking me from backspacing if I mistyped a letter. Worse, in text input fields that block me from exceeding a character limit, it traps me on that word that it wants to suggest.

The “Community Specialist” response is not helpful.
We want to COMPLETELY DISABLE the predictive and correction suggestions that pop up on the typing line while typing, but NOT the suggestions that pop up above the keyboard.
I have tried everyone's suggestions including accessibility switch control off for extended predictions - force quit settings, restarted iPhone 13 pro max and STILL get the inline predictions with the back arrow to change typing - SOOOOOOOOO annoying. Nothing Works!

I remember looking for a way to disable this anti-feature when iOS17 first came out, since it routinely would scramble things as I was typing. Sometimes I want to be informal and intentionally write words like “w/“ and “def” and it’d scramble them to “with/“ and “definitely”.
The worst was when the inline prediction would literally disable the left/right arrow keys; no skipping around in case it happened to have a prediction at the time. So glad they added the ability to disable this because it was a garbage fire from UI/UX at least from my perspective (and those who have a strong preference not to have interference while they’re typing).
I'd like to get rid of the predictive text next to the text AND the text above the keyboard. I don't have the predictive text next to what I'm typing. But the irritating as **** text thing keeps popping up above the keyboard.
id like to get rid of it all.
I think what's even more irritating is that it will go away and pop up every new sentence when I'm on message only.
anyone got ideas how to get rid of all of it?

Your suggested change fixed this problem I had experienced.
if I mark an existing word in notepad or while textin, et al; I intend to copy it, and I don’t need any suggestions about a similar word. If I accidentally touch the suggestion (just hovering above the marked word) it would replace the stored word and that is dangerous — especially if you don’t notice what you did.
”on my ipad pro, when I mark a piece of text for copying, it offers a corrected (different word) version, how can I turn off this dangerous feature?”

I, too, was extremely annoyed by this issue and I think I figured it out. Settings > Accessibility. Under "Physical and Motor," choose "Switch Control." Under "Keyboard," toggle off "Extended Predictions." This seems to remove the in-line predictions yet still gives you the three word options/emojis under the text.

I’m SO glad they give you the option now to separate this: “in line predictive text” versus just the suggestions above the keyboard. Anytime I wrote “the” my phone corrected it to “Theresa”!!! Obviously I wasn’t typing Theresa in ANY of these situations haha. I don’t even know her!
For me, it was Settings>General>Keyboard> under the category English location under Auto-Capitalization (at the time of this comment, I have iOS 17.3.1 on iPhone 14 Plus)

I hate this feature as well it has messed me up all day. I spent more time fixing messages than actually sending correct ones
Thank you! It worked perfectly. I still have the word options/emojis etc. but I no longer need to worry about accidentally hitting space and creating an additional word
Literally please read what FalconicKatadora said which is "i want the keyboard suggested words/emojis, but I don’t want the in-line ones that force autocomplete"

Yes! This drives me crazy! I am new to ios and I hate seeing all the blue lines when I know what I wrote is correct. Does that mean there’s no option to turn that off?

Turn off in-line predictive text but keep predictive suggestions.
