iPhone 15 Pro Photos are Dark

Pictures are coming out darker after being taken with the front & back cameras. Compared with the iPhone 14 Pro & the iPhone 14's photo looks better. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing with their new iPhone 15s or knows the fix to this? This is frustrating since I need to take photos & videos for work.

The only way I can get my image to look the same in the photos app and elsewhere is to Go to Settings -> Photos-> and toggle OFF View Full HDR. This shows the image as you can expect it to look outside of the photo app when exporting. You just lose all the lovely HDR brightness and contrast. Still very disappointing.

You are right. It is a problem with the camera. I took different photo with my Iphone 6 SE 1. Gen 2016 and with the Iphone 15 Pro (same position, same items or scene) and the Photos with the 6 SE are much brighter and nicer. The photos taken with the Iphone 15 Pro are dark, overpixelated and unsharp. They are simply ugly. I tried so many different settings. Even deactivated HDR (which should not necessary to deactivate because I have bought a phone with HDR!). Nothing helped. I had to return the Iphone 15 Pro back because Apple Support did not provide a solution. They know that there is a problem and do not address it. I am very dissapointed of Apple.

Seems to me like this one is working for apple ;)

Yes, it is not a user error. Some say it might be the software but I don't think so. The lenses or the mechanism are causing it otherwise it would be easy for Apple to fix it with an update. I think they don't want this problem go public. Imagine they would have to refund each buyer with the defect phones.

I have sent mine back after I realised that Apple is hiding that there is a problem.

Will you sent back yours? Or ask for an exchange?

Btw I am from Switzerland.

Hey iFolks :-) see what i did there?

First let me say that I absolutely see what you are all saying, AND I think you have an argument for a return. But I am not so sure this is a widespread problem. I say this for multiple reasons. The lack of most apple support personnel knowing about the issue is one. Reason 2, I havent seen widespread reporting of it on the news coverage sites about apple. (macrumors, 9to5mac, CNET, Forbes technology etc) I haven't seen it as large scale reported in Reddit either. From my experience, and I preordered my 15ProMax, i dont have the issue. THe photos here are from iPhone13 and iPhone 15 proMax selfie lenses. Both phones were set to Auto, basically with as much matching settings as I could.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro

ƒ/2.2 1/60 2.71mm ISO200

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max ƒ/1.9 1/60 ISO100

.....and turns out I cant upload and insert the native formats here. Can only insert .jpg in this post...here is a screenshot of the native shots. THe screenshot is JPG but the differences to me are miniscule.

Photo on left is the 15. It definitely looks less processed...i mean my skin ugh

, I take your point about whether the differences are miniscule. Let me clarify my point. I can tell the 13 pic is more processed, smoothed out and why I think my skin looks better. The fact you and I differ on which looks better shows how subjective the viewer can be. Meaning, we have two opinions and neither is right or wrong. (Schroedingers opinion if you will). Just a personal preference to what you like. And again I want to be clear, I absolutely agree folks have a problem with their phones. I just suspect Apples attitude would be that its down to end user opinion in most cases. Though i also suspect there are some quality control issues out of the factories too. And in defense of my statement I shoot with a full frame DSLR for my side gig with both canon and nikon. And each processes the pic slightly different out of the box. Its down to opinion which you like better. Its why I use Lightroom mobile for my iphone edits so I dont rely on software, but I am a professional photographer and love the granular control I get with the 15 way more than the earlier phones. Again thats my perspective only.

Yes, this is a known issue. I wonder why apple hasn't done anything. I have the 14 Pro max I got in Oct. 2022. I was using Samsung Note 10 +. It took way better and brighter pictures, I went to apple store, complained. They said its the default HDR. I was really disappointed cos 1st time using Iphone and this horrible experience!

And that in previous phone like IPhone 11, 12 wasn't like this. I think this started from the 13’s iPhone. A lot of software update. My pictures are not so dark as it was initially.

My photos are also turning out black. I took a picture of my dad and I and only my face was black and my eyes were a golden color. (Really odd) the rest of my body was the correct tone. My father’s eyes were black but the rest of his body color was fine. Most pictures I take people’s faces are a lot darker than their body. Also is there a way to brighten pictures taken in complete darkness? I am using night mode and I have changed all of the settings and nothing is helping.

Thank you!!

I’m a hairdresser and it’s almost impossible to capture a true life colour with this phone 15pro. I upgraded for the camera quality so I could get better content. Currently trying to get my old phone back (13pro) off my daughter so I can use the older camera. Apple can 100% fix this and they still haven’t. Is a major issue. I feel like I may just completely ditch apple on my next upgrade. Constantly having issues with camera issues
