Siri won’t review dictated text in iMessage App on Apple CarPlay after IOS 17 update

After the recent IOS 17 update on my iPhone SE, Siri quit reviewing texts that I dictate, using the iMessage App on Apple CarPlay. Siri sometimes gets a word or two before becoming garbled, but usually doesn’t read back anything I said. Worse yet, sometimes, the person I am messaging gets the text, “What do you want?” If I tap the review button on the screen, Siri doesn’t read back what I said. When I receive a text, Siri reads it to me correctly. Everything else in Apple CarPlay seems to work fine, including Siri giving directions, etc.

My car is a Lexus NX350h (brand new) with wireless Apple CarPlay, and it all worked fine before the IOS 17 update. I have tried using a cable rather than wireless and it doesn’t change anything. I have restarted my iPhone, checked that the Lexus software is up-to-date, deleted and reinstalled my driver profile… no luck. Also, my husband’s iPhone SE, does the same thing if it is connected.

I contacted Lexus and they don’t have any ideas. Thanks in advance for any help!

Thank you for taking time with your Lexus dealership to investigate the problem, as I've gotten nowhere with ours. My guess is Apple and Lexus will have to solve this together, once they hear about it from enough people. As has been pointed out, Siri seems to be listening too long and hearing herself and other things. I have figured out a bit of a work around until the permanent fix happens...

The swirling multicolored circle at the bottom of the screen is when Siri is listening and if you tap it, it stops swirling and Siri stops listening. Since Siri is listening too long, it appears you can stop Siri from listening if you tap it IMMEDIATELY after you dictate a text or give a command. The key is to tap the swirling circle the instant you stop talking... not before. Here is what has been working for me...

When you initiate a new text to someone, IMMEDIATELY after dictating the text, tap the swirling, multicolor circle at the bottom of the screen. Siri will read back the text and ask if you want to send it. If you say "Yes, or Send it", IMMEDIATELY tap the swirling circle and Siri will send the text. When you receive a text from someone, after Siri reads it and asks if you want to reply, if you say "Yes", IMMEDIATELY tap the swirling circle, say what you want and again IMMEDIATELY tap the swirling circle after talking. Siri will review the text (without the "What do you want...") and ask if you want to send it. So again, say "Yes" and IMMEDIATELY tap the swirl.

If you try to use the Reply, Change, Review, or Send buttons on the screen, they seem to work sometimes but I think if Siri is still listening, it might do something unexpected because it is still listening. If you tap the swirl before using one of the buttons, they usually work, but that's getting too complicated for when driving.

Hope this helps till the real fix occurs!

Hey GCM317,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. It sounds like 'Send messages without confirmation' may be enabled. Check and change that setting if needed using this guidance from Change Siri settings on iPhone - Apple Support.

"Change Siri settings for Phone, FaceTime, and Messages

You can perform tasks for Phone, FaceTime, and Messages with just your voice. With Siri, you can hang up calls and skip the confirmation step when sending messages. You can enable these features in Settings.

Go to Settings > Siri & Search, then do any of the following:

Take care.

I took my 2023 nx250 to the dealership. I’m also getting the “what do you want” at the start of every dictated message, it seems like Siri is taking her own dictation. Anyway my car was in with the tech department for the better part of a day. Forgetting and reinstalling devices, usb or no usb, many different iPhones used and troubleshooting on other cars on the lot. All had the same issue. They determined it is an Apple issue, since the iOS 17 update. They said it’s something that has to be corrected on the Apple side. Dictation was working perfectly on the same car for a year - the only change was the Apple update.

I am having the same problem. I have a 2022 Lexus NX250. I've tried the things you've tried.

Also, they update yesterday (on 12/13) didn't help at all.

I've determined that the statement in the text that says "What do you want" is actually Lexus talking. I tried to have Lexus contruct the email and when you call out "Hey Lexus" she repsonds with "What do you want."

I have not found a solution, other than the work around I posted December 29th. Basically, you need to tap the multi-colored swirl on the screen immediately after saying something to Siri, so that Siri stops listening. That seems to work every in every situation, but again, must be done the second you stop speaking.

I’ve found several other Lexus community discussions where people describe the same problem and that Lexus and Apple are supposedly working on the problem. Hopeful we will see a solution in a future update!

I have a Lexus UX 250H new May 2023. The CarPlay worked perfectly until ios17 came along. I’ve recently contacted Apple (after having spoken to both Apple and Lexus previously) and the Apple advisor confirmed to me that it was a Siri problem but he had no idea when it would be sorted. I’ve told Lexus they should be contacting Apple at the highest level to get this sorted. It’s nearly 6 months already!

Also tested when using CarPlay in an Kenwood aftermarket headunit and did not get the issue. This is the same iPhone (iOS 17.3) that also did not get the issue in a BMW. However that same iPhone does get the issue in a Kia EV9.

In the Messages app, Siri gets one word out when reviewing a message, and then cuts out. If I tell it to Send the message, it goes. So there's no problem with it hearing what I've dictated.

To check if the problem is specific to the Messages app, in the Kia I also asked Siri questions such as "what's the weather today". Siri read back quite a bit of the weather, but eventually cut out like it did with Messages app. Perhaps a few of you Lexus owners could do that test and see how it goes? My Kia is a new model. Does the issue happen only with newer Lexus or older ones as well?

I suspect it is a general problem with Siri speaking information, but Messages app is worse affected.

It seems to be related to the hardware in specific cars. CarPlay and Siri itself are all projected from the phone, so it only uses the hardware (screen, microphone and speaker) of the car and firmware to communicate with the phone and do the projection. My guess is there's something incompatible between affected cars' hardware and/or firmware and latest iOS releases. Hope it's the firmware, or Apple can create a workaround.

@txpaulieg Glad to hear that it's fixed now with your Merc. :-) The “Reply without Notification” option completely turns off Siri reading back what was written in Messages. Of course you will not hear Siri say anything when that is enabled.

This issue is about when “Reply without Notification” is disabled . Siri should read out the message when it is disabled, but it doesn't on certain cars. In my case, I hear one word from Siri, then silence.

As proof: on the same iPhone which has “Reply without Notification” disabled, and no other setting changes: on two cars Siri messages are read back, and on the third car they aren't read back. Other people posting here said it used to work with their Lexus, but stopped working they upgraded to iOS 17.x. So, clearly this issue isn't related to any setting.

I have the same issue with my Lexus NX 350H. It started immediately after the IOS 17 update. I have tried everything including resetting my phone back to factory settings (which was a major inconvenience). This is clearly an Apple issue and there are MANY complaints about it online for a variety of different car brands.

APPLE: For all the money you charge your customers for your technology and devices, why won’t you fix problems like this ASAP when you learn of them? I’m considering switching to android because I’ve just about had enough.
