Siri won’t review dictated text in iMessage App on Apple CarPlay after IOS 17 update

After the recent IOS 17 update on my iPhone SE, Siri quit reviewing texts that I dictate, using the iMessage App on Apple CarPlay. Siri sometimes gets a word or two before becoming garbled, but usually doesn’t read back anything I said. Worse yet, sometimes, the person I am messaging gets the text, “What do you want?” If I tap the review button on the screen, Siri doesn’t read back what I said. When I receive a text, Siri reads it to me correctly. Everything else in Apple CarPlay seems to work fine, including Siri giving directions, etc.

My car is a Lexus NX350h (brand new) with wireless Apple CarPlay, and it all worked fine before the IOS 17 update. I have tried using a cable rather than wireless and it doesn’t change anything. I have restarted my iPhone, checked that the Lexus software is up-to-date, deleted and reinstalled my driver profile… no luck. Also, my husband’s iPhone SE, does the same thing if it is connected.

I contacted Lexus and they don’t have any ideas. Thanks in advance for any help!

Thank you for taking time with your Lexus dealership to investigate the problem, as I've gotten nowhere with ours. My guess is Apple and Lexus will have to solve this together, once they hear about it from enough people. As has been pointed out, Siri seems to be listening too long and hearing herself and other things. I have figured out a bit of a work around until the permanent fix happens...

The swirling multicolored circle at the bottom of the screen is when Siri is listening and if you tap it, it stops swirling and Siri stops listening. Since Siri is listening too long, it appears you can stop Siri from listening if you tap it IMMEDIATELY after you dictate a text or give a command. The key is to tap the swirling circle the instant you stop talking... not before. Here is what has been working for me...

When you initiate a new text to someone, IMMEDIATELY after dictating the text, tap the swirling, multicolor circle at the bottom of the screen. Siri will read back the text and ask if you want to send it. If you say "Yes, or Send it", IMMEDIATELY tap the swirling circle and Siri will send the text. When you receive a text from someone, after Siri reads it and asks if you want to reply, if you say "Yes", IMMEDIATELY tap the swirling circle, say what you want and again IMMEDIATELY tap the swirling circle after talking. Siri will review the text (without the "What do you want...") and ask if you want to send it. So again, say "Yes" and IMMEDIATELY tap the swirl.

If you try to use the Reply, Change, Review, or Send buttons on the screen, they seem to work sometimes but I think if Siri is still listening, it might do something unexpected because it is still listening. If you tap the swirl before using one of the buttons, they usually work, but that's getting too complicated for when driving.

Hope this helps till the real fix occurs!
