Transfering to new iphone software update failing

I'm trying to transfer data from my iphone XR to a new iphone 14. However, the new phone keeps trying to install IOS 17.0.3 on the transfer but it keeps failing. It attempts to download and takes an age, then simply says I need to download again. There is no option to skip the software update. I've tried multiple times. What are the solutions? Is it a faulty phone? is there a way to transfer the contents of my current iphone if I setup the new one without transfer. eg. transfer after its set up?

Other users have encountered a transfer problem if the new iPhone updates iOS during the transfer.

If this is your case, stop the update and configure your iPhone as a new iPhone, i.e. without transferring data. This will allow you to update iOS.

To stop the update, force the iPhone to restart:

  1. A quick click on the volume+ button.
  2. A quick click on the volume- button.
  3. Hold down the side button until the Apple logo appears. This can take up to 20 seconds.

Then, erase the iPhone (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone and tap Erase Content and Settings) and then set it up again, this time by transferring the data with quick start.

Hello cdowonline,

We would like to see how we can help. Are you using an iCloud backup, a backup on a computer, or using Quick Start? Have you tried setting up the iPhone without transfering your data and then updating? If your iPhone XR is running iOS 17.0.3, then the update will need to happen before transfering your data. Once complete, you can restore from a backup or use Quick transfer after resetting the iPhone.

Cheers!
