Folders with red minus sign?

Mac OS Ventura 13.5

External HD with Folders with red minus sign.

Dragged Documents folder onto my desktop

Info window at bottom says "fetching" under sharing and permissions. Just keeps "fetching." Spinning wheel does not resolve if that matters.

Trying to access folder contents!

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 13.4

For all of my non-startup drives, I simply mark them all as permission free.

Right click on the external drive's icon and choose Get Info. At the bottom right of the panel that appears, click the lock icon and enter your admin password. Then turn on the check box for, Ignore ownership on this volume. Close the get info box.

You may need to restart the Mac, but everything on that volume will now be treated as belonging to no one, and you can do whatever you want with the contents.

Do I need a degree in computer science to open this folder? lol

No, I wrote the command so you can cut and paste.

I was Owner/Admin on the mac this came from and I am Owner/Admin on this computer.

That doesn’t necessarily mean what you think it does. Your identical usernames might have a different User ID (UID). The first user will be 501, and that number is incremented by 1 for each added user.

You can view the permissions on that folder by running this command and looking at the entry for that folder.

ls -l ~/Desktop
