iPhone Won't Update Even With Enough Storage and Using My Mac To Update It

So my phone stopped loading any photos sent to me. I thought this was a storage issue but realized my phone needs to be updated.

I went to update my phone (currently IOS 16.5) but it said that I didn't have enough storage for IOS 17. I deleted quite a bit and have 7 GB of storage free for the update but it still won't let me because of storage.

I thought maybe I would try to update it to 16.7 and make baby steps towards 17. It wouldn't let me download 16.7 and I would get a message that said "An error occurred while trying to update."

I did research saying that I should plug my phone into my Mac and try to update from there. I got through the whole process and the screen that said "your mac is preparing to update the software on this iPhone." But I haven't made any progress from there, it's been over 30 minutes! I just want my phone to be working right, someone please help me!!

Hi foxydog1234,

It sounds like you're updating the iOS for your iPhone via your computer. The process can take some time to complete. If needed, you can find more information here: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with the Finder - Apple Support

You can also check and clear storage to ensure the update completes as expected with the help of the steps here: How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support

If your iPhone won't update, check out the steps below found here: If your iPhone or iPad won't update - Apple Support

"Remove and download the update again

If you still can't install the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, try downloading the update again:

  1. Go to Settings > General > [Device name] Storage.
  2. Find the update in the list of apps.
  3. Tap the update, then tap Delete Update.
  4. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the latest update.

If you don't see the update in the list of apps or if the issue happens again, you need to update your device with your computer:

Learn how to use recovery mode if your computer doesn't recognize your device or your screen is stuck on the Apple logo for several minutes without a progress bar."

Cheers.
