Lots of reports of this in the forums, seems to be a bad font. Try going to the Font Book app and resetting your fonts.

Have you tried a restart? You make no comment on any troubleshooting you may have already done.
Thanks Tom - Resetting the fonts and then restarting my Mac did the trick - problem resolved.
Updated to to Sonoma and Safari displays unreadable characters on some but not all webpages, Facebook and a few other sites - wondering if there is some corrupt code and I'm needing a fix and some help. Thanks Dave
