Paying someone in the room with Apple Pay

I was assured by another Apple iPhone user that it was possible to pay them directly using Apple Pay - I have found no way in which this is possible. A guide suggested using iMessage but none of what was described was available. Is there such an option (UK) or is it country specific? Or am I just a numpty?

Sorry, it is only available in the US. They use an Apple Cash card that is different from a Debit or Credit card to transfer money between individuals. The Apple Cash card is similar to a prepaid card where you have to load money on it in advance before you can use it. Money can be transferred to and from the Cash card without fees that you would normally get from a Debit or Credit transaction.
