Will Sonoma slow down my 3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5?
The year on my Mac Mini processor is 2018.
I am reluctant to install a new system that I may or may not need if the end result is slower computing.

What I always do is make a clone on an external drive and test the system booting from that drive. I make a clone using Carbon Copy Cloner. That being said I would not expect any significant issues with speed as long as all your apps are compatible.

With your specs I would not expect any slowdown. I have a 2.6Ghz 6 core Intel I7 and did not notice any slowdown.
I have tested my mission critical apps on Mac mini 2018 3.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core I7 on an external 550 MB/s SSD SATA with macOS 14.0. Some minor issues so I am waiting for macOS 14.1 update before upgrading the internal 1 TB macOS 13.6 disk which AFAIK is ~2.6 GB/s. So of course the external disk boots somewhat slower but after that subjectively not much difference in speed.
Will Sonoma slow down my computer?
