iPhone Voice to text issue on iOS 17

Since updating to IOS17, when I use voice to text, it often cuts out the beginning of what I dictate, or leaves out whole words, or does not translate the last sentence. Its like it cant process the full sentences or starts dictating 3 words into what I am saying.

I have a workaround that works 100%, as far as I know.

  1. First you need to go onto your keyboard settings and add another of the English keyboards, it doesn't matter which country.
  2. Then you have to select the new EN (insert country name here) keyboard and delete the broken US English keyboard.
  3. Go back to 'settings/general/keyboard' and select 'dictation languages' and MAKE SURE THE (EN-US) KEYBOARD IS DISABLED and the new EN keyboard for another country is enabled.
  4. Finally, go back to "settings/general/keyboard' one last time and totally disable/reenable dictation for good measure.

This fix worked for me regardless of the alt EN keyboard used. Just as long as the EN-US keyboard is deleted and the dictation language is totally changed to a different country's version of English - you'll be gtg!

Get with the program Apple. Certainly no time wasted at the opportunity to take my money, but let's just let all of these $1500 iPhones just be crippled until you decide to "update" again. Whatever.

Hello chowda169,

We see you have an issue with Dictation delaying between when you activate it and the text beings typing. There are a few steps you can walk through that may help resolve this.

  1. If this occurs in a specific app, force close it: Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch
  2. Then: Restart your iPhone
  3. Make sure your iOS is fully updated to iOS 17.0.3: Update your iPhone or iPad
  4. Then test Siri and work through these steps if Siri also delays: If Siri isn't working on your iPhone

Reply back how these steps do for you.

All the best.

Dictation doesn't work anymore, iPhone 13 Pro Max. Even apps like Duolingo don't recognize my voice. Siri hears me fine.

Everything done so far:

  2. Then: Restart your iPhone
  3. Make sure your iOS is fully updated to iOS 17.0.3: Update your iPhone or iPad

I've been using the Australian keyboard and although not perfect, it seemed way better. Based on a couple of posts here today I went back to US keyboard and it seems significantly worse and so I am back to using Australian. The US keyboard duplicates words and even entire sentences often; frequently drops words; and seems incapable of doing end punctuation anymore. If I say "period" it types out the word. Sigh.

Yes, please! Anyone with this issue please submit a support request. My talk to text is all but useless at this point and when I contacted support about it a month ago, I figured it would be a well-known issue and he would have no problem understanding what I was talking about but the guy literally told me that nobody else has had any issues with it. Then I looked it up myself and lo and behold. Many people had reported issues. Obviously the guy just straight up lied to me. Please submit support tickets for anything related to voice to text!!

If you call tech support services. they can walk you through the steps to fix it.

I can’t remember all the steps.

The steps i can remember where to turn off

AUTO beta updates.

turn off dictation for 20 seconds, turn it back on turn off punctuations to for 20 seconds and turn it back on. Turn the phone off turn it back on. Then Reset Siri. then turn off phone and turn it back on.

I might have missed a step. If I did I’m sorry.

Like the original poster I can still voice to text it's just messed up

One tip for those people in which voice to text is not working at all: I have found that if there are too many apps open in the background Siri will not work. Try going in and closing most of your apps and see if that fixes the problem with dictation and voice commands not working at all.
