iPhone Voice to text issue on iOS 17

Since updating to IOS17, when I use voice to text, it often cuts out the beginning of what I dictate, or leaves out whole words, or does not translate the last sentence. Its like it cant process the full sentences or starts dictating 3 words into what I am saying.

This started after last nights update 17.4. Idk why they do updates knowing things that people use daily won’t work. This is upsetting to me in alot of ways. Being disabled dictation is sometimes the only way I can talk to people.

Oh my god, I tought I was the only one who noticed. I could have SWORN since the iOS 17 update, my voice to text has just been AWFUL. To the point where I literally have to spend so much more time going back and trying to fix everything than if I just typed it out to begin with. I don't know what they changed but they need to change it back immediately.

BRILLIANT! Thanks so much for the great workaround… I have tried it and it is working for me!

But still while we are shelling out thousands of dollars for new iPhones… Apple needs to do much better and make this work for everyone with disabilities!!!! It’s unconscionable that they can’t get it right with all the AI technology available these days!! 🤯

If you call tech support services. they can walk you through the steps to fix it.

I can’t remember all the steps.

The steps i can remember where to turn off

AUTO beta updates.

turn off dictation for 20 seconds, turn it back on turn off punctuations to for 20 seconds and turn it back on. Turn the phone off turn it back on. Then Reset Siri. then turn off phone and turn it back on.

I might have missed a step. If I did I’m sorry.

This will fix the dictation-not-working issues on 17.4 for dictation not working at all using the English/US keyboard, (worked for me....so far):

-Add another second keyboard such as Canada/English. Then go in and delete the English/US keyboard.

Next, select and reinstall the English/US keyboard and delete the extra Keyboard you just added. For whatever reason, the deletion and then again adding/installing the English/US keyboard again fixed the issue for me! Not going to install future Public Beta's though, not stable.......lesson learned!

Wow, that is amazing. I changed to the Australian keyboard, and immediately voice recognition is much improved. It occurs to me that it might not be specifically because of the Australian keyboard, but maybe because of the accumulated errors to dictation due to crowd-sourced data. I’ve always had this theory that dictation gets worse and worse the more I use it. For example I might say the word “whole” and no matter how clearly I enunciate, it will type “hall”. I’m not sure in what regional dialect “hall” and “whole” (or “hole”) sound indistinguishable, so it is rather mystifying. I will be interested to see if the dictation quality deteriorates as I continue to use the Australian keyboard. And I would be interested if others noticed deterioration over time as well.

(And again to reiterate, degrading dictation quality and accuracy is the topic of this thread. That is distinct from a problem where Voice dictation is non-functioning.)

Hello chowda169,

We see you have an issue with Dictation delaying between when you activate it and the text beings typing. There are a few steps you can walk through that may help resolve this.

  1. If this occurs in a specific app, force close it: Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch
  2. Then: Restart your iPhone
  3. Make sure your iOS is fully updated to iOS 17.0.3: Update your iPhone or iPad
  4. Then test Siri and work through these steps if Siri also delays: If Siri isn't working on your iPhone

Reply back how these steps do for you.

All the best.

Like the original poster I can still voice to text it's just messed up

One tip for those people in which voice to text is not working at all: I have found that if there are too many apps open in the background Siri will not work. Try going in and closing most of your apps and see if that fixes the problem with dictation and voice commands not working at all.
