iPhone Voice to text issue on iOS 17

I noticed the same thing happening when giving Siri commands to create reminders or calendar events. It often just leaves out entire words. It does seem part of the general pattern of Siri just getting worse the more I use it. It seems to be using crowd sourcing at some level for its language understanding.

I am having this issue now after updating to 17.2.1 yesterday. The voice to text in messaging is horrible. Even worse than it had been before 🙄 It is now skipping words and phrases entirely, as well as refusing to put in the punctuation when I say it. If I try to manually insert punctuation while voice to text is open it won't let me. I hope they come up with a fix for this very quickly! I use voice to text so much that I am actually thinking of trying to figure out how to revert back to the previous version of iOS to regain functionality.

I have been doing speech to text with almost 0 difficulty for years. Ever since I got A new phone (15), the speech to text has multiple errors. It drops whole words, uses the wrong words in context, doesn't hear punctuation or calls for new line. It's been a very frustrating transition.

This started after last nights update 17.4. Idk why they do updates knowing things that people use daily won’t work. This is upsetting to me in alot of ways. Being disabled dictation is sometimes the only way I can talk to people.

Thewie68 has the right idea....this is the only thing that worked for me. in fact this is better now then it was before using just the english one i have reported this to apple as well.

Honest question here... Is it correct to assume that if you are running the Australian or New Zealand keyboards, you will need to speak with an Australian or New Zealand accent to have good dictation results?

Oh my god, I tought I was the only one who noticed. I could have SWORN since the iOS 17 update, my voice to text has just been AWFUL. To the point where I literally have to spend so much more time going back and trying to fix everything than if I just typed it out to begin with. I don't know what they changed but they need to change it back immediately.

I have almost wrecked my F350 Ford truck multiple times trying to type my texts.

Before I upgraded to a iPhone 15 pro max and ios17.3.1. All I had to do was press the little microphone and I could dictate my text without having to type.

Reading this discussion. Sounds like the dictation option has been taken away?

Does this mean a law suite could be brought against apple if they caused an accident through this decision?

interestingly enough, the voice to text actually seems to make the mistake of reversing the intention of your statement so, for example, if I used voice to text to say it's a sunny day outside so I'm going to go to the park the comment will come through to say it's a sunny day outside, so I'm not going to the park. somehow it misinterprets what you're saying to convey the exact opposite message if you mean to say yes, I am doing this. Your reply will be something the exact opposite and the person you are sending the text you will think you're not going to do it, but that's not what you meant to say the voice to text just screwed it up, they completely reverse the meaning and intention of your comment or text because the voice to text is so horrible. It actually gets it 180° wrong and reverses the intention of your state statement so really when you use voice to text you can be sure that you're going to say exactly the wrong thing or make the person angry or completely confused.

This problem is making my phone useless to me, I dictate *everything* and used to use Siri dozens of times a day but neither is working consistently, Siri offered me web pages that didn't even match my questions, can't make simple appointments and couldn't even do a timer for me, the dictation is missing the beginning and end of sentences and even with predictive text off - when I dictate "is there a leprechaun emoji" it types 'is there a (inserts clover emoji)" and wont even type the words! I changed the keyboard to Canada but it's still awful. My iphone 10XR was better than the iphone 15!!

I tried, but to no avail. What i said and what it wrote, "I hope by removing the keyboard and adding it again it will fix it." but it wrote, "By removing the keyboard and adding it it"

I hope they have a fix soon.

Lately I've noticed when I am dictating with messaging the little microphone which is disappear and I can no longer dictate. If I go out of the message and come back in it reappears. This is on top of all the other things we have discussed as to lack of functionality. Has anyone else noticed the microphone completely disappearing in the middle of texting?

I agree it's horrible. it has gotten worse and worse and worse. Words do not show up, words are stuck together, I expected more out of Apple than this. This just justifies my reason for not upgrading to a new iPhone. It's not worth it if the quality of the services are terrible. By the way I had to type in terrible because the speak to text stopped

Voice dictation going on here. I was thinking of notating where I had trouble with each of the following, but it took me so long, I gave up. Read that as, my current Apple products are causing major productivity, losses and frustration. Monitors, do not give me a routine line about what I could look up or whom I could call. Is:

I have time tomorrow, [and to] those who have experienced similar things, I would like your input. First, the voice dictation shuts off early and is less accurate than ever. This happening while there’s a major revolution in language models. This has been extreme recently.

Also, my attempts to select text and edit it, whether typed or spoken, causes the selection of text to be one line below or one line above the intended target. I have been doing this for a long time, and these devices generally have been accurate. This difference appears to be a deliberate feature/manipulation by the current release of this operating system. To end, I don’t know.

I will not accept this.

So my question: am I stuck with android? Is this where we’ve come? Apple has been such a great customer-oriented firm. Now, it appears they’ve oriented their services toward some other objective. I am not going to read another support article, or go to genius bar, or pay for another overpriced device. Also, Google invade privacy badly. It’s a dilemma, obviously. Requesting useful feedback.
