iPhone Voice to text issue on iOS 17

Since updating to IOS17, when I use voice to text, it often cuts out the beginning of what I dictate, or leaves out whole words, or does not translate the last sentence. Its like it cant process the full sentences or starts dictating 3 words into what I am saying.

I have a workaround that works 100%, as far as I know.

  1. First you need to go onto your keyboard settings and add another of the English keyboards, it doesn't matter which country.
  2. Then you have to select the new EN (insert country name here) keyboard and delete the broken US English keyboard.
  3. Go back to 'settings/general/keyboard' and select 'dictation languages' and MAKE SURE THE (EN-US) KEYBOARD IS DISABLED and the new EN keyboard for another country is enabled.
  4. Finally, go back to "settings/general/keyboard' one last time and totally disable/reenable dictation for good measure.

This fix worked for me regardless of the alt EN keyboard used. Just as long as the EN-US keyboard is deleted and the dictation language is totally changed to a different country's version of English - you'll be gtg!

Get with the program Apple. Certainly no time wasted at the opportunity to take my money, but let's just let all of these $1500 iPhones just be crippled until you decide to "update" again. Whatever.

BRILLIANT! Thanks so much for the great workaround… I have tried it and it is working for me!

But still while we are shelling out thousands of dollars for new iPhones… Apple needs to do much better and make this work for everyone with disabilities!!!! It’s unconscionable that they can’t get it right with all the AI technology available these days!! 🤯

I have always had a Samsung galaxy. This past fall I switcted to an iPhone. I think Samsung is superior, but I have gotten used to the iPhone. The dictation though is absolutely terrible on the iPhone and it may be a dealbreaker for me and I may have to switch back. I rely on it to much. Really not sure how it could be so bad. There are other things that I just shake my head, such as not being able to place an app anywhere on the screen that you want but I can deal with that. Or having to Hold my finger on a spot to get the cursor to go there. So dumb.

You should always buy the tool that best meets your needs.

If you press and hold the spacebar on the keyboard, the entire keyboard becomes a trackpad and you can move the cursor very easily.

Same issue..however… mine will duplicate entire sentences sometimes twice in one text message!it also will miss entire blocks of what I’ve dictated…very frustrating when driving and trying to obey hands free laws and the hands free dictate features not working properly

It also sensors my language is anyone else having this issue? I’ve watched YouTube on how to fix this and none of them have worked. Wondering if anyone has heard if there’s an update coming to address it because it seems to be pretty global.

People are getting my text because I don’t typically check them after I voice them think I’m repeating myself

Has anyone considered that this is not a mistake? I noticed that if I’m on Facebook or YouTube the efficiency of the voice to text decreases exponentially. I think that they don’t want you to write certain words, so the spellcheck just suggest words that don’t even exist. I don’t think it’s as innocent as everyone seems to think it is. Apple is very smart, and these things are done for a reason.

Why would Apple care what you post on Facebook? Are you suggesting that Apple and Meta are somehow in league with each other to censor you? It is, if nothing else, an amusing idea.

I have noticed the decline in voice dictation since my iPhone 6s Plus was updated from iOS 10. Every year it got worse and worse and worse, and now it's become pretty much unusable. i've noticed it is much worse on certain apps than others. I don't understand why Apple feels like it's AI has a better idea of what we are trying to say versus what we are actually saying. The irony is that it gets everything correct and then as you're looking at what you've dictated, you can literally see it changing things without you requesting it to do so. It's lunacy. it makes you appear as if you were completely illiterate. It's time to go back to physical at this point.

Little late to the party here but yes, I agree. Talk to text dictation is useless. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why it insists on cutting out the millisecond I pause talking. For some reason, it’s not doing it now on this website but if I try to talk into the Google search bar, it’ll cut out the second I stop speaking. It’s so frustrating I literally am considering switching back to an android because I’m so sick of dealing with this garbage. Having to hit dictation literally five times just to get out one little sentence because I didn’t say it fast enough is insane. I can’t be the only one having this issue.

I have a disability and rely on voice to text. It was working very well and all of a sudden it is now completely rubbish. It used to easily pick up uncommon words such as minerals that I use often as I’m in the crystal trade. Or names and addresses of people I use often, now it doesn’t recognise anything and puts in the most random punctuation and misspelling of simple words. I have used Apple my whole life, but because of this issue I’ll be switching to android. As far as I’m aware, I haven’t even updated my phone it just happened.
