iPhone Voice to text issue on iOS 17

Since updating to IOS17, when I use voice to text, it often cuts out the beginning of what I dictate, or leaves out whole words, or does not translate the last sentence. Its like it cant process the full sentences or starts dictating 3 words into what I am saying.

This started after last nights update 17.4. Idk why they do updates knowing things that people use daily won’t work. This is upsetting to me in alot of ways. Being disabled dictation is sometimes the only way I can talk to people.

Voice dictation going on here. I was thinking of notating where I had trouble with each of the following, but it took me so long, I gave up. Read that as, my current Apple products are causing major productivity, losses and frustration. Monitors, do not give me a routine line about what I could look up or whom I could call. Is:

————

I have time tomorrow, [and to] those who have experienced similar things, I would like your input. First, the voice dictation shuts off early and is less accurate than ever. This happening while there’s a major revolution in language models. This has been extreme recently.

Also, my attempts to select text and edit it, whether typed or spoken, causes the selection of text to be one line below or one line above the intended target. I have been doing this for a long time, and these devices generally have been accurate. This difference appears to be a deliberate feature/manipulation by the current release of this operating system. To end, I don’t know.

I will not accept this.

So my question: am I stuck with android? Is this where we’ve come? Apple has been such a great customer-oriented firm. Now, it appears they’ve oriented their services toward some other objective. I am not going to read another support article, or go to genius bar, or pay for another overpriced device. Also, Google invade privacy badly. It’s a dilemma, obviously. Requesting useful feedback.

Respectfully submitted,

A guy who needs to depend on these crazy products.

Yes, when I use voice dictation, it will take the same sentences I’m using and repeat them in small phrases over and over until I have literally three screens full of text. I have to go back and fix.

I have noticed this happens when I unplugged into a USB port in my car, but then it also happened when I was using my phone independent of any kind of other device.

It left me with an undecipherable three large screens to try to correct. Because I was talking and not looking at the screen. It has now occurred multiple times. Wasn’t this an issue previously? Also, today is April 24th, 2024 and it is happening to me now

I have always had a Samsung galaxy. This past fall I switcted to an iPhone. I think Samsung is superior, but I have gotten used to the iPhone. The dictation though is absolutely terrible on the iPhone and it may be a dealbreaker for me and I may have to switch back.

You should always buy the tool that best meets your needs.

Or having to Hold my finger on a spot to get the cursor to go there.

If you press and hold the spacebar on the keyboard, the entire keyboard becomes a trackpad and you can move the cursor very easily.

Make sure you have Bluetooth devices in range turned off or turn off the Bluetooth setting for the phone. I found that the failure to transcribe accurately was solved when I turned off my headphone/mic set and my failure to have my voice recognized at all was solved by turning off Bluetooth on phone. I think it is trying to search out the devices and either use their mics or it is confusing the signal in some other way. Thus solved my problem.

Same issue..however… mine will duplicate entire sentences sometimes twice in one text message!it also will miss entire blocks of what I’ve dictated…very frustrating when driving and trying to obey hands free laws and the hands free dictate features not working properly

It also sensors my language is anyone else having this issue? I’ve watched YouTube on how to fix this and none of them have worked. Wondering if anyone has heard if there’s an update coming to address it because it seems to be pretty global.

People are getting my text because I don’t typically check them after I voice them think I’m repeating myself

I have been having the same problem as almost everyone else on this forum with voice to text not working or not working correctly. I tried changing the keyboard that didn’t work. But I just read what someone posted about other Bluetooth devices that may be connected to my phone causing the problem. Sure enough when I opened the Bluetooth settings it showed that my earbuds were still connected and once I disconnected them voice to text worked fine.

Has anyone considered that this is not a mistake? I noticed that if I’m on Facebook or YouTube the efficiency of the voice to text decreases exponentially. I think that they don’t want you to write certain words, so the spellcheck just suggest words that don’t even exist. I don’t think it’s as innocent as everyone seems to think it is. Apple is very smart, and these things are done for a reason.

@Cyclik on page 1 - BRO!! This Worked!!! OMG thank you so much. I was getting ready to chuck my iPhone across the room because the dictation was so bad. I followed your instructions, deleted the US-English keyboard and replaced it with Canada-English and now the dictation is flawless!! And this is with me having slight laryngitis atm! :D

Cannot thank you enough.

NOTE - the only Visual difference is that when I tap the Dictation button it now turns the whole keyboard int a voice-recognition machine, showing the "sound waves" etc. Just a note so others can expect that as well. Just tap the screen (sound waves) again to turn off dictation when you're done. :)

I have noticed the decline in voice dictation since my iPhone 6s Plus was updated from iOS 10. Every year it got worse and worse and worse, and now it's become pretty much unusable. i've noticed it is much worse on certain apps than others. I don't understand why Apple feels like it's AI has a better idea of what we are trying to say versus what we are actually saying. The irony is that it gets everything correct and then as you're looking at what you've dictated, you can literally see it changing things without you requesting it to do so. It's lunacy. it makes you appear as if you were completely illiterate. It's time to go back to physical at this point.

Little late to the party here but yes, I agree. Talk to text dictation is useless. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why it insists on cutting out the millisecond I pause talking. For some reason, it’s not doing it now on this website but if I try to talk into the Google search bar, it’ll cut out the second I stop speaking. It’s so frustrating I literally am considering switching back to an android because I’m so sick of dealing with this garbage. Having to hit dictation literally five times just to get out one little sentence because I didn’t say it fast enough is insane. I can’t be the only one having this issue.

May 26, 2024 4:30 AM in response to chowda169

Yes, please! Anyone with this issue please submit a support request. My talk to text is all but useless at this point and when I contacted support about it a month ago, I figured it would be a well-known issue and he would have no problem understanding what I was talking about but the guy literally told me that nobody else has had any issues with it. Then I looked it up myself and lo and behold. Many people had reported issues. Obviously the guy just straight up lied to me. Please submit support tickets for anything related to voice to text!!

I have a disability and rely on voice to text. It was working very well and all of a sudden it is now completely rubbish. It used to easily pick up uncommon words such as minerals that I use often as I’m in the crystal trade. Or names and addresses of people I use often, now it doesn’t recognise anything and puts in the most random punctuation and misspelling of simple words. I have used Apple my whole life, but because of this issue I’ll be switching to android. As far as I’m aware, I haven’t even updated my phone it just happened.

checking in to report this as a problem as well. Recently moved from an android to iPhone and was appalled with the voice dictation.

also reporting that adding the New Zealand keyboard and removing the US keyboard makes the dictation work perfectly.

That’s a real head scratcher, makes me wonder about the origin of a bug like this and why it doesn’t occur on a different keyboard. This entire message was dictated using the New Zealand keyboard. I’m Texan.
