You have two choices to turn it off:

  • Gesture:--> Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears, than slide it.
  • Option:--> Settings>General... scroll down to the last option "Shut Down" and tap on it.

Two things to try.....before you throw in the towel.

Double-tap the screen with 3 fingers

You may need to vary the speed of the double-tap to nail it

If no luck after 3-4 tries with the double tap.....

Press and release the Up button quickly

Press and release the Down button quickly

Hold the Side button for at least 30 seconds. You must ignore the "slider" that appears and keep holding the Side button until the Apple logo appears in the center of the screen. Then, release.

You can try the following methods:

1. Force a restart of iPhone: Press and hold the Volume Up button, then quickly release it. Press and hold the Down Volume button, then quickly release it. Press and hold the Side button. When the Apple logo appears, release the Side button.

2. Turn Off iPhone with AssistiveTouch: Click on the "Restart" option from the AssistiveTouch menu and you will be asked if you are sure you want to restart your phone, click on "Restart" again to confirm and the phone will turn off and on.

I have a problem similar to Theodore Clark. Several times, the type on the screen has gotten enormous, and the screen is frozen. Pushing the side buttons doesn't work. I can't make the type smaller or go to another screen, although sometimes the phone randomly changes screens. If it locks on the sign in screen, I can't try to sign in because the characters are so large not enough of the numbers are available. There isn't anything that I have consistently done to cause this. Today I pulled my phone, which had been working just fine, out of my purse, and this had happened. Again. The only solution that I have found is to wait for the battery to run down, recharge it and restart it, which can take more than a day. It doesn't look to me like I can open the phone and pull the battery.

ETA: Pushing the side buttons does not cause the off-slider to appear.

How can those of us who have no way to select anything on the screen to scroll to the right with the "slide to power off" options appear after pressing the volume up on the left of the phone and power button on the right, manually power off

the phone? There seems to be a misunderstanding with some of the responses that the phone is working properly. However, there reason I'm trying to shut down the device is to reset the hardware, because the device isn't working properly. How do people manually shut down an iPhone if the touch screen doesn't allow us to select things?

I also can't get into my phone to change things in Settings. I have no way to get into the phone beyond the lock screen while notifications are piling up.

I'm getting by using my laptop for those who are Apple Message users, but those who aren't on Apple Messages I can't reply to.

Isn't there some way to force the phone off in the situation that the screen doesn't allow you to use the touchscreen? Isn't it IT Admin 101 that you have a way to power off the device manually, so you can reset the hardware and get things working, aka "try shutting it down, then turn it back on to see if the issue persists?"

Currently, I'm manually trying to keep the screen on as long as possible to run the battery down, but this has been going on since last night and at 11:45 am today it still has 37% of the battery to go and seems like an extremely slow way to shut down the phone manually. I'm missing work opportunities right now, it's not good.

If not, this seems like a serious design oversight on Apple's part.
