Notifications in iOS 17 are broken

I have noticed two problems with notifications.

First, the default notification tone has been reset and cannot be changed. This is a significant dissatisfier.

Second, if notifications are enabled for an app but visual notifications (i.e., Lock Screen or Banner) are not enabled, a notification sound will not be triggered.

I do not know how to request these be fixed, but I'm wondering how can I revert to iOS 16.

Since iOS 17.3.1 and now 17.4, my notifications only work when i reinstall my apps and I am not going to do that with every single app I have. Even if I go into the notifications settings and play around with it, no notifications are delivered since itsll all set on "on" anyway. Apple, please fix this!

Thank you for your response but this does NOT address the issue. All it does is confirm that Apple has fundamentally changed how Notifications function and, in my opinion as the customer, has broken the feature.

Allow me to restate the problem. If I do not select one of the radio buttons in the Alerts section of the Notifications settings for the app in question (see image), I will NOT receive a notification that the app has an update.

Prior to iOS 17, if I had configured an application's Notifications as such, the app would trigger an alert tone and would have a badge indicating that an update event had occurred. While I will still see the badge, I do NOT hear the tone.

I've found that almost every single app, including Apple's own apps, require their notification settings revisiting after the iOS17 update has happened.

As your collection of apps builds up over time, having to go through them all again trying to remember what you had set for each one is NOT the smooth iOS update process one would expect!

Of particular concern for me was the Home app that monitors motion sensors and smoke detectors as part of the security of the house. As I had set it up to send me a notification if someone went into my bedroom when I wasn't home, I didn't realise for two months that notifications had been turned off during the update. I only noticed when I saw a record in the event log that had happened when I had left my phone at work by mistake and the notification wasn't on the Lock Screen.

Hi FrankMoore,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! To change alert sounds, the steps below can help:

Use notifications on your iPhone or iPad

1. Go to Settings and tap Notifications.
2. Select an app under Notification Style.
3. Under Alerts, choose the alert style that you want. If you turn on Allow Notifications, choose when you want the notifications delivered—immediately or in the scheduled notification summary.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day.

Hi FrankMoore,

Regarding the default tone notification issue, you can submit feedback to Apple directly using the website here: Product Feedback - Apple

Typically app updates for third party apps will show a notification in a banner on the Lock Screen or Home Screen or Notification Center. If the option for banner notifications is off, the update details won't show. If you open the app the app developer may choose to notify you that way if the notification option is off.

You can also enable automatic app updates or manually update with the steps here: How to manually update apps on your Apple device - Apple Support

Again, feel free to leave feedback for Apple on the website previously provided or reach out to them directly to further assist. Get Support

Cheers.

The way that your question is phrased, it seems to assume that you can revert to a prior version of iOS, when this is not possible.

Prior to iOS 17, if I had configured an application's Notifications as such, the app would trigger an alert tone and would have a badge indicating that an update event had occurred. While I will still see the badge, I do NOT hear the tone.

As you know, on a user-to-user site, we are all users.....just like you. Apple is not here. If you want to provide feedback directly to Apple, you can do so using this link:

Franks point is correct though. iMessage for example - you have to choose a banner in order for the sound to work. I can’t have the sound without the on screen notification. Previously you could have a sound with no on screen notification but now at least one banner needs to be selected. Many of us don’t want on screen notification but like the sound.

i bought a new iPad because they told me a chip was dying. Screen kept closing and going to a black screen with a spinning icon, then back to the home screen. Can’t do anything during these events, can’t shut down or get to settings, etc.

Started happening on my new iPad also.

seemed to be happening when notifications popped up, so I turned off notifications on many apps I use, words with friends2, and others. Seemed to fix the issue. Hasn’t happened since.
