Unable to approve family app request. Getting message but no approve option.

I’m attempting to follow this article for a paid app request. I get the message on my phone and the link takes me to the app store. The issue is I’m not getting an approve or decline at the top as shown. Has worked fine for free apps. I thought maybe I just need to buy the app once landing on app store, but that just puts it on my device not the requested device. What now? I approved directly on the app but I won’t always be present. What am I missing for this yo work like it should?

the fix is to make sure under settings>iMessage"You Can Receive iMessage To And Reply From" the phone number and email (which is the Apple ID) is checked and under "Start New Conversations From" only the phone number was checked.


no where on apple's support forums was I able to find the fix, i had to go to ask-to-buy-only-going-to-one-device.2342662 to find an answer so I'm posting it here so we have a fix here too.

Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support


Update your Apple Watch - Apple Support


Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support


That should help to further isolate a potential software conflict.
