DVD player app not working on MacBook Air (M1, 2020), Big Sur 11.7.9

When insert commercial DVD that used to play on my previous Mac, these DVDs worked.

Now, on MacBook Air M1, 2020, no longer.

This is what happens: I insert DVD, DVD player launches, viewer launches as do "control buttons" such as press, menus, skip ahead BUT when they are pressed, nothing happens.

I hear disk spinning.

Have tried to press space bar, tried to view with VLC and Quicktime- to no avail.

Any suggestions? Another user mentioned using Rosetta but I do not know that is.

When the disc shows as a volume to your Mac, can you open it? Does it show a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder on that disc? It should. If not, then it isn’t a true DVD-Video disc that Apple DVD Player can play.

Rosetta is an on-the-fly translation layer for (certain legacy) software code. Your Mac will let you know if that is available as an option. If you need to install Rosetta on your Mac - Apple Support. It is not a troubleshooting tool, and shouldn’t be needed for Apple’s own apps.

If the disc is dirty (fingerprints or worse), or if the disc has more than minor scratches, then that may cause reading problems. Try cleaning with a clean cloth in a motion from the inside to the outside (not circular motion). The cleaning cloths for glasses (as sold or bundled giveaway from opticians) are very suitable for this.

Ok. It often works to drag-and-drop the VIDEO_TS folder onto the player application icon. I would have tried VLC like that as well as an alternative player. Not sure why it would work on one Mac, but not the other. It should work equally well.

Thanks for reply! Not sure what you mean: When the disc shows as a volume to your Mac, can you open it? No "control button" that pops up when player app is opened is accessible/clickable.

The files on DVD are indeed shown- as both VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder. This is why I tried VLC player.

Thanks for Rosetta link- will read up on this.

Will clean the discs but I tried several and got same results-all discs have been stored in their cases so not sure if dirt/scratches is issue.

I did not try to drag the VIDEO_TS folder onto player app - i only tried to drag it on VLC and that did not work. Will try the player app.
