Struggling to optimize my macbook air

I would love to understand how to create the most space possible on my hard drive and store everything I do on iCloud. I cannot seem to dicipher the instructions from Apple well and would love to have someone give me advice. My goal is to create enough space to update my OS to the best version available for my older macbook air. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You cannot create more space; what you have is all you'll ever have. You can add space with an external drive.

Free up storage space - Apple Support

You free up disk space by removing user data and ONLY user data ... that data you created, downloaded or copied. Anything else is system data and removing it will damage your OS. if you have a small 120GB or 250GB class disk, the problem may be exacerbated as you need to leave 15-20% of the disk totally unused at all times.

If the data you need to delete is important, copy it to an external source before deletion.

None of this is difficult, you just have to follow the instructions step by step.
