iPhone backup in iTunes - shows as a new iPhone

I want to make an iTunes backup of iPhone 14 into PC - but after connecting the phone, iTunes is recognizing it as a new device, it says “Welcome to your new iPhone” and only offers me to set it up as a new iPhone or restore it from the back up; but NOT to make a back up. I don’t want to loose data and I don’t know how to fix it.

iPhone 14, iOS 17

The "Setup as New" option means it will set it up as a new device syncing to that computer -- not that it will erase the device (which is what it sounded like to me when I experienced it).

When connecting an iPad or iPhone to computer iTunes for the first time, you will get the choice to restore from backup or setup as new; the setup as new choice does nothing to the iPhone or iPad (i.e., it does not erase the device -- however another user here in this forum has noted that if any data was previously synced from another computer to the device, that data will be removed from the device.).
