I have a Mac Mini and I have tried inserting the SanDisk Adapter into the SDXC slot and nothing happens. I do not see an icon in order to access the data on the chip in the adapter. I do not want to reformat the chip (as if I knew how) and lose my data.

You will not see the empty adapter with Finder or on your Desktop. If everything is working as expected, you will only see the Card that is inserted into the adapter.
If you are not seeing a card when inserted into the adapter, then double check your Finder Preferences to make sure that the "External disks" box is checked.
Try reseating the adapter and card in the Mac mini to make sure it is fully seated in the card slot.
Test a different SD card in your Mac mini’s card slot to see if it is working.
Test that adapter and card in another he Mac or PC to see if it is working.
I just spent about 90 minutes with Apple and it appears the issue is my computer doesn't recognize the micro chip from my dash cam. Hmmm. The chip is from my dash cam that dropped and broke. I will try inserting the chip in my new dash cam to view the video I want to review.
External disks is checked. I have tried switching the lock on the adapter and nothing changes.
