LG SP80NB80 DVD writer not working on newer MacBook pro laptops

The problem turns out to be lack of power. I used a usb-c to usb-2 connector to attach to the drive. The drive stuck in a search loop and didn't work. It turns out to be lack of power. The solution is to connect the drive to a self powered hub, I used the j5create hub. I connected the hub to the laptop through the usb-2 to usb-c connector. connecting the drive to the hub now worked correctly.

The Apple drive like that requires a whopping 900 milliAmps. you can examine the required and available power in:

 menu > About this Mac > (system report) > USB
