Tap to pay not working for Apple Pay

Hi there!

For about 3 months, my tap to pay feature in Apple Pay has not been working. I am still able to use Apple Pay with the double click for online purchases so I know the actual CC info is correct and working and that nothing is wrong with my Apple Pay account. I even tried removing my cc info and re-entering, but the tap to pay feature is still not working. I've tried in 5-6 different retail stores. Any advice or suggestions?

I would check if the NFC reader in the phone work in other use cases.

For example if you can read NFC tags using a third party app.

For example either of these:

NFC Tools on the App Store (apple.com)

NFC-Reader on the App Store (apple.com)

If that does not work the NFC would seem to be the issue.

If that works, it's harder to say for sure.

If you can't read any NFC with the apps

Having done that you can try to isolate if this is a software issue or hardware issue by checking if it works after a clean install.

You can try a clean install of your device after a factory reset:

First make sure you have a backup

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Then facory reset your device:

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

And set it up without a backup. See if the issue persists.

If it still does not work it is a hardware issue and will need service:

Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support

If that solved it there was a software issue. Try restoring the backup and see if it still works.

if that made the problem come back the backup is the problem

Good luck!

Is the issue with the iPhone Xs in your tag line? Or a different iPhone?

What happens then when you have the payment screen ready on your iPhone, and bring the iPhone close to the NFC terminal?

Nothing at all? The screen does not change?

Is there an error?

Is the correct card selected when attempting to pay?

Or are you saying the double click of the sleep button is not bringing up the payment screen on the iPhone?

Please clarify where its getting stuck.

Same with me. My Apple Card still works online but my tap pay doesn’t. The card will open, I tap to pay, and the message on the store credit card machine says “unsupported card” after I tap it. So I use a non-Apple card to tap pay and it works fine. This is happening at stores I go to regularly where it has worked fine for years. Very annoying and I hope they figure it out soon. I didn’t notice when it started happening but probably around the new year. I have an iPhone 12 Pro and the current iOS I have is 16.3. No other updates are available yet

Same issue here. The apple card in the apple wallet doesn't seems to send the info to the nfc reader at numerous POS systems where i have used it before until about two weeks ago. Other credit cards like amex and discover work fine on the same POS where i normally use it thorough the apple wallet. The apple card does pop up on the phone screen, i authorize it by the sleep button, face id works, but then the POS reports an error msg to the effect of "card error" ...not a authorized or approved msg as i would normally would expect.

I had the same issue when i was on vacation in Venice. Double tap paying stopped on 18/03/24 I have updated my ios, signed out and then signed in again, restarted my phone, and deleted the card and installed again. For online purchases everything is fine but double tap option still not working for almost 12 days. I can see the ✔️ but on pos machine it is rejected and apple pay says it is rejected.

UPDATE: Hi - Tried the tap feature today at a third retailer and worked fine with my default card. I can only assume there was some "glitch" this weekend when it didn't work for me. No settings were changed/touched during the weekend and the 3 cards were all active and had not expired. The first two retailers where the tap feature did not work (last weekend) were supermarkets.
