Tap to pay not working for Apple Pay

Hi there!

For about 3 months, my tap to pay feature in Apple Pay has not been working. I am still able to use Apple Pay with the double click for online purchases so I know the actual CC info is correct and working and that nothing is wrong with my Apple Pay account. I even tried removing my cc info and re-entering, but the tap to pay feature is still not working. I've tried in 5-6 different retail stores. Any advice or suggestions?

I would check if the NFC reader in the phone work in other use cases.


For example if you can read NFC tags using a third party app.


For example either of these:

NFC Tools on the App Store (apple.com)

NFC-Reader on the App Store (apple.com)


If that does not work the NFC would seem to be the issue.


If that works, it's harder to say for sure.


If you can't read any NFC with the apps


Having done that you can try to isolate if this is a software issue or hardware issue by checking if it works after a clean install.


You can try a clean install of your device after a factory reset:


First make sure you have a backup

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support


Then facory reset your device:

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support


And set it up without a backup. See if the issue persists.

If it still does not work it is a hardware issue and will need service:


Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support

If that solved it there was a software issue. Try restoring the backup and see if it still works.


if that made the problem come back the backup is the problem

Credit cards with contactless maybe but iPhones never. You may be mis-remembering.

Can you imagine the damage that could be caused to your bank account if you lost the phone and the finder could wave it at a POS terminal without having to double-click the side button and show Face or Touch ID, bearing in mind I just bought my wife’s ipad with my phone in store! Apple Pay by contactless iPhone has no limit basically.

The same thing is happening to me. It’s been going on for the past couple weeks or so. My Apple Card works, but when I use my tap to pay using that account, doesn’t work. “Unsupported Card”, but I’ve used it at these merchants plenty, previously.

Since this doesn’t seem to be an isolated case, I hope Apple knows about this and is figuring out a fix. If I have to I’ll call in, but I’m not seeing how this will help if it’s a software issue.

So this issue cropped up for myself and my better half at the beginning of this month (Jan 2024). My Apple Watch will allow NFC (tap) payment using Apple Card, but both our iPhones will not. I have not tried using another card. The error varies depending on retailer, but all are immediate failures as soon as the iPhone is within range of the reader which tells me the NFC in the iPhone is functioning to some degree.


Normally I chalk things like this into the 'stuff happens' category, but for both our iPhones to suffer the same failure within days of each other is a bit too coincidental for me.

**Update**

Texted and called apple support and they ran the tests and apparently everything was alright with the hardware, then i schedule a call with technical support to further investigation…

They restarted my Iphone via phone number and still had the same issue the tap to pay most of the times doesn’t work on retail stores and concert venues.

Just noticed that mine isn't working either and I'm on 17.4.1, which I totally reset a couple of weeks ago cause the "App won't work more than once" problem. Since then I'm having random shut-downs of the phone and as mentioned, my Apple Wallet isn't working. I also tried to delete the Card and set it up again, but nothing... What the H... is going on with Apple? Never problems before, and now. One problem fixed and another 5 pop up???

My tap and pay does not work. The machines don’t even recognize my phone. It’s just like nothing’s happening. It doesn’t matter what card I tried to tap all of them in my digital wallet. There’s no connection between the phone and the machine. I’ve tried calling Support several times, give me the runaround telling me to reset my iPhone of course my insurance expired along time ago so I don’t have that to cover me, but it’s obviously some kind of issue with the phone. Can it be fixed?

Hi mine stopped working on Saturday 27th July (was working fine on Friday 26th). Tried 4 terminals at the same retailer, also used 3 different cards but no luck. Tried another retailer and no luck again (cards are fine). Any ideas ? (using iPhone 15 Pro Max with a Mous case - never had a tap-to-pay issue until now - in UK).
