iPhone 15 Screen Scratching Easily?

I've had my new iPhone since launch date and only just noticed a tiny scratch in the top right of the screen. It's not minor as I can feel it by running my nail along the screen and just very confused where it's come from. I always have the phone by itself in my pocket and haven't dropped it or anything similar at all.

Compare that to my previous iPhone 12 Pro Max which I never had a screen protector on and it's been dropped a handful of times with not a single scratch on the screen.

I don't have a screen protector atm so technically my fault, but I'm struggling to understand what could have scratched it so easily.

An unprotected iPhone screen carried in your pants pockets may not be hosted in as pristine an environment as you think. When pants are washed, some reside detergent is left, which then when dried can turn into microscopic crystals. In addition we live in a world with micro-sand particles, which can accumulate in our pockets. You can't necessary see them, but when they are brushed up against an unprotected glass screen, these teeny tiny particles become abrasives and can scratch your iPhone screen. This is why I personally NEVER keep my phone in my pocket. Instead, I keep my phone in a belt clip case, which places the phone face down so it can't be harmed by anything. And I also make sure to put a decent quality screen protector on my phone right out of the box, to ensure the screen can't be harmed. I find it more amazing, people will pay $1000+ for a phone and not spend a few dollars more to protect it.

While I'm not going to post any links to articles, there are a number of really good, not biased articles about the new glass formulas on modern iPhones and scratch resistance. Google them. Simply said, the newer formulas are intended to make the screens harder to break, which since Apple moved to this glass is quite apparent. But when you make glass harder to break, that doesn't mean it's harder to scratch. In fact the opposite is more common. Glass which can flex more to avoid breaking, can be easier to scratch. So, it's wise to use a screen protector and this becomes a non-issue.

My iPhone 15 Pro has multiple scratches on the screen. Deep scratches that the fingernail can snag within one month!!! I've never dropped it, barely do anything but set it up on a table. What happened?

The iPhone 11 Pro I just handed down has zero scratches after months without a "screen protector" ... why build a phone that requires a "screen protector" afterall?

Actually someone did make a screen that doesn’t scratch. And that company’s name is Apple on the last 4 iPhones generations. A point you keep conveniently forgetting in every post.

Search this forum for previous iPhones including the 14 series and you will see the same complaints with some swearing that no other iPhone used to scratch and that years iPhone is the worst ever. Usually those posts will be around the September launch date of that years current model. At no point has Apple ever advertised a scratch proof screen. Previous models absolutely have been prone to scratches regardless of what your previous experience has been personally. The posts on this forum alone let you know that is true…many literally saying the same things that some of you all are saying. So it’s impossible to say that the last 4 iPhone generations did not scratch when users said otherwise.

There is clearly a very big problem with the new iPhones. My 15 pro is covered in microscopic scratches and scuffs after 7 days of ownership, without any drops or falls.

Anyone interested in getting a new phone should wait until Apple is able to use/design a new glass. Do not waste your money… you will be very disappointed.

I will be returning this phone and going back to my 13, until this issue is resolved.

It depends what you keep in your pockets, but it's not that particular iPhone, it's all the smartphones regardless they will get scratched and damaged if unprotected and kept into a pocket with other things like keys or metal objects. So a screen protector and case will do but even that won't protect the phones 100% if kept loose with other objects. There are people that don't care if it's getting scratched, and they don't buy any screen protectors or cases, prepared to buy a new iPhone more often.

Same the case this side. I used 12 pro for 2 and half years and it is still scratchless, and note that I never used any screen protector even for a day. On the other hand, It is just 2 weeks for me with my new 15 pro max and despite being extremely careful i found one scratch on my screen. Looking at the experience of the people, I strongly feel that there is something wrong with the material quality.

If you are curious to know why i didn't go for screen protector?

Having the experience of 12 pro’s robust screen , i thought apple would have maintained the same level of quality at the least and hence i didn’t go for any protection except for the back cover.

Really disappointed!!! Am not sure if apple is listening and if they are taking notice of such serious issues.

I bought my iPhone 15 Pro on December 21 and cleaned my screen for the first time on January 24. What I thought was a thin strand of fruit fiber is actually a deep and distracting scratch! The scratch is so pronounced that I can feel it with my finger nail. As I run my finger nail across the scratch the screen feels like it’s plastic. I initially assumed Apple shipped my phone with a thin removable plastic film covering my screen. But unfortunately that was not the problem. The iPhone 15 Pro screen is soft and easily scratched.

I carried my iPhone 10xr in my pocket daily for 5 years, regularly engaged in physically challenging outdoor activities, and did not have a single noticeable scratch on the screen. My 15 Pro screen is not as scratch resistant as my 10xr’s screen. I hope Apple offers replacement quality screens at no cost to owners.

I am just noticing tiny scratches on my brand new iPhone 15. I don’t understand as I am always very careful. I am in my 70s and this was a present and don’t know what to do next. I am feeling not so bad after seeing so many people saying the same thing, what do we do now.

Install a good quality screen protector, which will hide the micro-scratches and prevent anymore scratches. That's what you do now.

I really am at a loss for words. My beautiful new iPhone 15 which I have hardly used seems to have scratches over it. I am 70 years of age and this was a present. I have had iPhones and iPads since beginning. I met Steve jobs and Sir Jonathan Ives in the car park at Cupertino the year the iPad came out. I have photo to prove it. I love Apple products and so sad about these scratches. What do we do.

I told you when posted the same words above. Put a screen protector on your iPhone.

You keep asking the question about what to do. You can certainly take your iPhone to your Apple Store and show it to them and they will tell you cosmetic issues are not warranty items. Then when your there, you can also do what I've told you twice now and pay Apple to install a screen protector on your iPhone. Apple has sold and installed screen protectors on every iPhone they've sold, going all the way back to iPhone 3.

I went to Apple Store Edinburgh showed them thread line scratches all over screen . The person looking at it went to Manager of store came back and said they weren’t willing to put new screen front on in other words as if I had made scratches. If only there was a way this 80 year old woman (me) could have recorded me with my new phone. Didn’t go out with it. Waited on screen protector in post then changed my mind and journeyed to store. Ended up I just paid there and then for new screen. Cost me over £200. They did it within an hour, which shows they could have easily done it free. I even bought Apple care but seemingly this doesn’t cover it. I have had iPhones iPads iMac since first came out. Never a scratch on previous iPhones. I am sure this will be found out to be a flaw.

The time it takes to replace a screen has nothing to do with whether it should be free.

Instead, if your screen was scratched because you chose not to apply a screen protector before using it, you somehow caused the scratches, whether from a pocket or the inside of a purse, which is worse.

Your best bet is always to leave the phone sealed in the box until either you have a protector ready to apply or you are at the Apple Store and they can apply a protector for you.

Screen scratches are considered cosmetic damage and therefore are not covered by AppleCare+.

There is no screen defect occurring across the iPhone 15 product line, and if your individual phone had been faulty the Apple Store staff would have told you such.
