iPhone 15 Screen Scratching Easily?

I've had my new iPhone since launch date and only just noticed a tiny scratch in the top right of the screen. It's not minor as I can feel it by running my nail along the screen and just very confused where it's come from. I always have the phone by itself in my pocket and haven't dropped it or anything similar at all.

Compare that to my previous iPhone 12 Pro Max which I never had a screen protector on and it's been dropped a handful of times with not a single scratch on the screen.

I don't have a screen protector atm so technically my fault, but I'm struggling to understand what could have scratched it so easily.

An unprotected iPhone screen carried in your pants pockets may not be hosted in as pristine an environment as you think. When pants are washed, some reside detergent is left, which then when dried can turn into microscopic crystals. In addition we live in a world with micro-sand particles, which can accumulate in our pockets. You can't necessary see them, but when they are brushed up against an unprotected glass screen, these teeny tiny particles become abrasives and can scratch your iPhone screen. This is why I personally NEVER keep my phone in my pocket. Instead, I keep my phone in a belt clip case, which places the phone face down so it can't be harmed by anything. And I also make sure to put a decent quality screen protector on my phone right out of the box, to ensure the screen can't be harmed. I find it more amazing, people will pay $1000+ for a phone and not spend a few dollars more to protect it.

While I'm not going to post any links to articles, there are a number of really good, not biased articles about the new glass formulas on modern iPhones and scratch resistance. Google them. Simply said, the newer formulas are intended to make the screens harder to break, which since Apple moved to this glass is quite apparent. But when you make glass harder to break, that doesn't mean it's harder to scratch. In fact the opposite is more common. Glass which can flex more to avoid breaking, can be easier to scratch. So, it's wise to use a screen protector and this becomes a non-issue.

Me too, went from a 12 pro max to the 15 pro max and within a few weeks I had a pretty significant scratch in the center of the screen and one of my mics went bad. Apple did replace the phone for the bad microphone. I have a screen protector on now. Been rocking an iPhone since the inception of the iPhone. C’mon guys, price goes up, quality control goes down.

I haven't missed any point. And Apple has used the very same glass formula on iPhone for at least the last 3 years. Glass can scratch and if you don't protect it, Apple doesn't warrant against accidental damage. Put a screen protector on your phone to avoid further scratches.

If you want, schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and show them the scratches. But don't be surprised when all they do is offer to sell you a Belkin Screen Protector on your phone. Apple sells and installs screen protectors in Apple Stores all day long. Why? To protect the very expensive investment people made in their phone. If Apple didn't think there was any reason to put a screen protector on iPhone's, they likely wouldn't sell and install them themselves.

I switch from the iPhone 12 Pro Max to the 15. My 12 Pro Max never had a screen protector and it doesn’t have a single scratch on it after all these years. I’ve had the 15 for a few weeks and it scratches so easily it beyond disconcerting. Screens are a balance between rigidity to protect from scratches and flexibility to protect from drops. This iPhone screen seems to have all the structural integrity of the infamous iPod nano screen.

Thank you for this. I’ve had tons of phones that I use with no case and no screen protector . I’m a professional photographer by trade, so I do not drop things ever. I exercise that same discipline when handling an iPhone. This particular iteration is so egregiously bad when it comes to the touchscreen. It has all the structural integrity of warm butter. We all should expect more from a $1600 device. It’s just not good enough.

Quoting a description isn’t scientific diagnostic of the problem. I can tell from almost 17 years of personal experience with iPhones, (I have worked for Bellsouth/AT&T for all of those years) and have had iPhones since 2007. The difference glass between my iPhone 11 Pro Max and this 15 pro max is night and day. They have 100% gone to a cheaper glass, or have chosen a softer glass that is less likely to crack (though tests show this isn’t the case). Either way, glass that scratches from possible air particulate that is in the pockets of pants is absurd. I would bet a large pot of cash that Apple chose to save money on glass due to economic reasons, which is extremely unfortunate because the glass quality should be second only to internal component quality. It’s a shame they took this route.

I had an iPhone X without a protector or case since it launched and there is only a small crack in the upper corner from a 6 foot drop on a cement tile floor. Other than that it is fine. I had my 15 since launch and it has two small scratches in the middle of the screen already and it fell off of a couple books, about a 6 inch drop onto my nightstand and it now has a crack across the bottom of the screen. Not sure what they did for this screen but definitely is not the quality of past screens.

Im very religious in buying a case, screen protector and camera protector as soon you buy a new phone. But this time I didn’t know I was going to receive such a fragile object as a phone…which can be easily damaged in less than a week.

My case and camera protectors arrived the second day I was using the phone, but the belkin-like screen protector had 1 week to be delivered.

Somehow, in those days even though I was being mega careful and I never dropped the phone or put it on dirty surfaces…the phone got 3 very small scratches deep enough to be felt with the nail near the middle of my screen.

I have never had this issue before with any previous owned iphone. Last one I had was the SE, and I have been to the beach many times with it without EVER using a screen protector and that phone still has 0 scratches. Unbelievable

Now the screen protector arrived for the 15 and at least the scratches became barely notorious once it was applied.

I really hope this together with the hard case, will prevent the phone from acquiring more scratches or even breaking. I usually change phones every 3-4 years..so we will see.

I am extremely disappointed to already see scratches on my 20 day old iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone XS Max that I turned in, although ancient, had no scratches and never had a screen protector. I now have an amFilm Screen Protector but cannot use the lens protectors because the ESR Hybrid Case with Stash Stand will not close with the protectors.

Will the lenses scratch as easily as the primary screen?

The lens covers over your cameras are Sapphire Glass, which is almost impossible to scratch. It is NOT necessary to put lens covers on them and can in fact degrade the quality of your photos if you do.

Same thing happened to my IPhone and Apple Watch. If you let someone else use your device, especially people with long fake nails, your IPhone can get scratched. It can also happen if you were wearing fake nails. If the scratch is small, you can buff it out with an eraser. If it is small, you can also put on a screen protector. Big scratches are something else, though. You may need help from third party companies, which will cost 50-300

How do I know what? If you mean that Apple doesn't warranty cosmetic issues, it's because many many many have taken their iPhone to Apple and Apple has almost uniformly denied warranty on scratches. And Apple's actual iPhone Warranty specifically excludes cosmetic damage. Glass doesn't scratch by itself. So it just makes sense to spend a few dollars to protect an iPhone screen from scratches by installing a screen protector.
