iPhone 15 Screen Scratching Easily?

I've had my new iPhone since launch date and only just noticed a tiny scratch in the top right of the screen. It's not minor as I can feel it by running my nail along the screen and just very confused where it's come from. I always have the phone by itself in my pocket and haven't dropped it or anything similar at all.

Compare that to my previous iPhone 12 Pro Max which I never had a screen protector on and it's been dropped a handful of times with not a single scratch on the screen.

I don't have a screen protector atm so technically my fault, but I'm struggling to understand what could have scratched it so easily.

An unprotected iPhone screen carried in your pants pockets may not be hosted in as pristine an environment as you think. When pants are washed, some reside detergent is left, which then when dried can turn into microscopic crystals. In addition we live in a world with micro-sand particles, which can accumulate in our pockets. You can't necessary see them, but when they are brushed up against an unprotected glass screen, these teeny tiny particles become abrasives and can scratch your iPhone screen. This is why I personally NEVER keep my phone in my pocket. Instead, I keep my phone in a belt clip case, which places the phone face down so it can't be harmed by anything. And I also make sure to put a decent quality screen protector on my phone right out of the box, to ensure the screen can't be harmed. I find it more amazing, people will pay $1000+ for a phone and not spend a few dollars more to protect it.

While I'm not going to post any links to articles, there are a number of really good, not biased articles about the new glass formulas on modern iPhones and scratch resistance. Google them. Simply said, the newer formulas are intended to make the screens harder to break, which since Apple moved to this glass is quite apparent. But when you make glass harder to break, that doesn't mean it's harder to scratch. In fact the opposite is more common. Glass which can flex more to avoid breaking, can be easier to scratch. So, it's wise to use a screen protector and this becomes a non-issue.

Didn't think I'd get nearly 100 people in the same position, what a downgrade this year has turned out to be! I feel they could have forgone the titanium frame (no one ever asked for or wanted this) and invested in a better screen. To say a piece of glass can scratch so drastically from minimal handling and no real direct contact is just shocking and something Apple clearly are aware of as it isn't covered in the slightest by any cover.

Yep, the iPhone15 is a major downgrade for me from my iPhone 12 Pro. I never had a screen cover on my old phone— never got a single scratch. I have had the iPhone15 for less than two months— several weeks of which there was a screen cover on it that cracked and had to be removed. No problem i thought, considering my last iPhone never got a single scratch with no screen protector— and i was ROUGH with that phone lol. But the screen on my iPhone 15 is covered in tiny scratches. It’s ridiculous. This phone is a downgrade in more ways than that— the camera is terrible in comparison, they didn’t bother to give a new charging block despite changing the block style so it no longer works with a usb port, when you click “open in app” on a webpage half the time it takes you to the App Store despite the app being totally updated while the other half of the time it actually opens the app— i guess this is a slight improvement over my old phone which never opened the app, only the App Store; the screen seems to glitch constantly. I’m so mad i upgraded to this POS. This will be my last iPhone unless they make some major changes.

Same with my iphone 15 pro max! I remembered to do a search and here I am. I have NEVER used any screen protector on previous iphones. I just went from my iphone 11 (zero scratches with no screen protector) to the iphone 15 pro max yesterday night. IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS, there are hair line scratches all on the top of the front of the phone and a couple that I can feel with my nail. WHAT is going on?! iphone glass was made of gorilla glass. I remember seeing a guy scrape his keys on it with zero scratches! How did this get scratched? It was only in my back pocket of my jeans, which is where my iphone 11 was kept for the last 4 years daily! NOT happy at all. Going to address this with the store and see about a refund.

I still have all the phones. NO SCRATCHES of any kind.

Then you were very very lucky. As far back as iPhone 6, with EVERY new iPhone release there are threads just like thread about how awful the newest iPhone screen scratches. Feel free to do a search and you'll find pages of threads on each new model. You have just been lucky, that's all. And every iPhone can be scratched and were in fact scratched.

I bought my iPhone 15 Pro on December 22 and cleaned my screen for the first time today. What I thought was a thin strand of fruit fiber is actually a deep and distracting scratch! The scratch is so pronounced that I can feel it with my finger nail. I initially assumed Apple shipped my phone with a thin removable plastic film covering my screen. Wrong again!

I carried my iPhone 10xr in my packet daily for 5 years and did not have a single scratch on the screen. ****

I’ve had the same issue. I had an iPhone 12 for 3+ years without a case and had no scratches at all. Got the new iPhone 15 a couple months ago and just noticed three pretty significant scratches on the screen (one of which I can see while typing this, which is pretty annoying). Getting the sense reading the other comments that the iPhone 15 is a lot more delicate than prior version. Really regretting versioning up.

Congratulations, you added weight and aditional expenses to an expensive asset which has been designed and advertised to be light (titanium) and probably you will have a fatter, bigger an uglier phone. Nonsense.

hundreds of people now endorse this issue, and on my case my apple business br, replaced my phone after three months, in which the screen was a Jackson Pollock. Without paying any fee. Something that never happened before, and I still have most of my old devices to compare…

Dear Katana-san, if you read the thread carefully you will see that I actually did that, but not on a soulless online feedback form. And at least on the company i work for, Apple has acepted our demands without conditions, I can imagine the driver after the decision. But those individual people (+400) that doesnt have this force behind them seems to not be that lucky.

the iPhone is advertised without protectors or cases. Any accesories or screen protectors changes the tactile experience. Dont get me wrong i own cases for when im do sports or mountain activities. But the scratches doesnt happened on those harsh conditions but on the same office-home scenarios in which all the other phones has been pristine.

the other day i was doing a iPhone tech art frame with an iPhone 3gs, and yes it had scratches, but taking on account the number of years it was my workhorse, it had less than my iPhone 15

I'm a former Android user who recently purchased the iphone 15 plus. I remarked to my wife how easily the screen scratched compared to my previous Android phones. It's quite disappointing - i've had it about two months, and there are so many tiny scratches that reflect in the light and distract me. I can't wait to get rid of this device and go back to the Samsung Galaxy line of phones.
