Apple Watch battery drains super fast after 10.1 update.

Series 7 Apple Watch. After 10.1 update my battery only lasts a few hours. I can literally watch the percentage go down. Rebooted the watch. Shut off background app refresh after advised by a friend. Still drains ridiculously fast. It’s essentially useless now. I’m out of ideas. Anyone else have this problem? This is crazy.

My watch used to last two days, even with me running an hour a day. I no longer run and now it drains faster. I have to put it on the charger overnight and again mid-day. Normally, it takes about an hour to charge. But there are days that it takes up to five hours to hit 100%. I haven’t added anything or changed any settings since I got it almost two years ago.

Same here!!! I first got the Apple Watch SE 2nd gen and thought it was a battery issue. Returned it to get the gen 9. Set up my gen 9 and same thing. I’ve talked to Apple and told them something is wrong with the latest update and of course they told me there isn’t and that my watch passed the diagnostic test they ran. I’d love to have a watch that I don’t have to charge every 3 hours 😒

I spent 2 days on text message with Apple Support about my Apple series 7 going from normal operation on Friday morning to a hot mess Friday & Saturday. Battery was super hot, I couldn’t wear it & battery was draining ridiculously fast.

I’m glad folks here figured out how to resolve it because Apple was suggesting that I send my watch to a technician to get it looked at. It’s a software update that caused this issue, pretty sure it didn’t need to be sent out for a repair 🙄

Thanks to everyone here on this thread. Appreciate you!

Sorry! Did you uninstall all 3rd party apps? That fixed for many/most who had battery issues as I did.

After the battery issue was resolved for me I had another problem. Watch would no stay unlocked. Online chat with Apple and another visit to the apple store .... And a heated discussion with them. Apple replaced my Series 9.

Restored from backup made that day. Now all is well. Watch has been off charger for the last 10 hours. Battery is at 55%.

Good luck

I’ve never dealt with a problem with this from my series 7 right before receiving my series 9. The best thing I’ve found to do on another thread is to delete the MobyFace app if you have it installed. After doing this my watch stayed on 27% and now it’s on the Belkin charger I have. If you like the app you can keep it on your phone and receive the photos for your faces that way especially if you purchased bands from them (South Park,Rick and Morty)

I just wanted to say that removing the 3rd party apps from my watch seems to have helped a great deal, having restarted both my iPhone and watch and charging them fully I have full functionality ( minus the apps I removed) and having gone through a few cycles to make sure, I’m back to normal more or less. I might add, I’m a bit of an app hoarder, so although I removed many, I did keep some. I definitely removed Moby, Facer, and a great many others of different types from games to news to whatever, many of which I hardly ever used, if at all. So ,although the calamity is still fairly calamitous and the day and a half I spent dealing with the problem is time I won’t get back, at least it’s a problem that I can now wait for a software update to fix while still having a usable Apple Watch, for the most part, at least so far. But I think it’s now time to start getting the work around circulating amongst the numerous traumatised Apple Watch hapless victims of this odorous battery bug, A.K.A watch OS 10.1 so their pain can begin to diminish somehow, and so that hope can be restored in their relationship with what Apple likes to call their most personal product.( bloody marketing departments and their hyperbole!) But alas, I digress, my original intention was just to state that this fix does appear to actually work ( it did for me) but also & perhaps more importantly, to just say a massive thanks to whomever figured this out and then posted their solution to one of the most egregiously awful bug fix own goals perpetrated by Apple in the history of the device to date. Kudos to you and many thanks for sharing your experience with the community, I think it’s really going to do a lot of good for those of us lucky enough to stumble upon it.

I’m glad it seemed to work for but for a lot of us we don’t have this installed. Therefore this isn’t the permanent fix for this problem. I also went and set it up as a new watch but that doesn’t solve the battery issue. Secondly this started happening right after the 10.1 update so removing apps is not the solution to fixing bad software. We should not have to be troubleshooting for Apple. Removing and resetting the watch is not the solution. But I understand trying something if it helps you use your watch which for a lot of us has become useless.

Not only did the battery drain make my watch useless, but I contacted Apple Support who instructed me first to run a diagnostics test, said nothing was found, then instructed me to do a force restart (hard boot) and the watch won’t boot past the Apple logo now. This whole situation bricked my watch. Have an appointment at Apple Store tomorrow but am very upset because my Ultra worked order t before this update.

HOLY SNAP!

I legitimately was going through the exact same thing that a lot of the people on this thread are talking about! My battery would die legitimately in minutes. Earlier today I read on this very thread somebody talking about the MobyFace app and that removing it immediately stopped that issue.

I just removed the Moby app and a bunch of other apps that I wasn’t using on the watch and boom! I’m still at 100%! Honestly, just the fact that I’ll be able to go to 100 was enormously helpful!

If you guys are having the same issue, most of us are having I’m telling you remove any non-native apps, including the MobyFace app and boom!

Have been in contact with Apple support twice (online chat, in-person appointment at genius bar). Results and advice from support chat: Apple said diagnostics look good, battery condition at 84%, Apple support said fully charged battery important for all day performance, recommended select charge to 100% when put on charger, I asked if I should turn off optimized charging in settings, Apple support said to not turn off optimized charging, recommended taking the watch to apple store for further support. Results from in-person support: diagnostics look good, has this (S4) watch ever been submerged in water (answer is no, it's not exactly water proof), Apple support said it is water resistant and designed for swimming (then why ask?), delete and reinstall apps from Smart Stack (already did that when 10.0 came out), delete third party apps (did that when 10.0 installed), turn off background app refresh (did that when 10.0 installed), reset watch (made no difference). I asked if the software can be reverted back to last OS (9.6.3) because I had none of these problems before watchOS 10. Apple does not support this option (will not is different than cannot). I asked if it would help all-day performance if the battery was replaced? Apple support said yes; however, if the battery has 80% or more capacity the cost is $299, if the battery has less than 80% capacity the cost is $99. Apple said if current performance is not acceptable the watch could be traded in for a credit of $60 toward a new watch, lowest cost equivalent size option with trade-in is about $400 (with tax). Bottom line, watchOS 10 has negatively impacted me, and apparently other users. The only supported solution is a costly forced obsolescence or expensive battery service. Verbal and written feedback has been provided to Apple about the design, performance, and options provided with watchOS 10.
