I've tried to sync my phone with my itunes library on my laptop, where I have some cd's which I have ripped.
What has happened is all the music on my phone has been deleted, and replaced with just the CD's.
Why didn't it sync them - ie put them all in the same libary?
Can I get the other music back? I've tried looking in the icloud backup but there doesn't seem to be an option

You can only sync the phone to one iTunes library at a time. If this was the first time you attempted to sync it with your laptop, or the first time since syncing with a different computer, then what happened is normal. The media on the phone will be removed and replaced with the media in the library you’re syncing it with.
Music is not part of the backup. That would be redundant. Any synced media should still be in your iTunes library.
Purchased media can be re-downloaded at no charge using the ID you originally used to purchase it.
it had been synced to this laptop before, and not another machine in the meantime. so I dont know what happened
It’s hard to say. I would suspect something happened to change the library ID on the laptop, causing it to need to re-sync.
