when I try to share any documents (pages or pdf etc ) directly from document , I go to share , via email , select the format etc , new email window opens but without the file attached - this has works form years and suddenly it won't !! any ideas please ( I am not to technical on my Mac )

Apple broke this capability in earlier versions of macOS Ventura and Pages 12.2 or so. It has since been fixed. Simplest solution for you right now is to drag and drop the Pages or PDF document in question as an attachment to an opened Mail compose window.
