Double-tap not opening notifications (symbol shakes side to side)

Apple Watch Series 9, watchOS 10.1, double-tap gesture works flawlessly, but is "rejected" when I have an incoming notification. I thought (per Apple's press release) that one of the things it was supposed to do was open, say, an incoming message notification. It doesn't. I have to touch the screen to open the notification, THEN the gesture works to initiate a dictated reply. It also doesn't work to open a preview of an incoming Gmail message. Am I misreading the press release?

  • Viewing a message from a notification, scrolling through longer notifications with an additional double tap, replying using dictation, and sending a message.
  • Performing the primary action from notifications, such as replying to an incoming message from a messaging app and snoozing reminders — including from third parties.

I got in contact with Apple and basically if you have your “tap to show full notification” on (open settings on watch, go to notifications, and scroll down), it won’t open the message on the double tap. If you turn it off and get a message and look at your watch it automatically

opens the message, which I don’t like. The person I spoke with said that would be a good thing to mention in the feedback-to allow you to double tap and open the message right when getting the message notification. So if you have that setting turned off and raise the watch to see who texted, it automatically opens the text then you can double tap and reply. Other than that, if you leave that setting turned on, get a text and then try to double tap to open the message, it will not work.

I’ve been trying to play with the double tap features in a variety of apps. Here’s what I’ve discovered so far. 1st used it to scroll through smart stacks. No problems at all. Then tried it with camera app to take a remote picture. It didn’t work. Tried to pause a timer & it didn’t work. Tried to pause a song using my AirPods, that didn’t work. BUT…when I tightened my watchband they worked. However with the band tighter it didn’t work to scroll through smart stacks. Don’t know if this applies to your situation or if it helps. But at least try tightening your band to see what happens.
