Many thanks for your reply and taking the trouble for doing that.

The Restart procedure didn't work and although the start screen would appear I could not tap in anything or interact with the screen with my fingers so unable to enter passcode or 'Swipe' the Shut Down slider.

I actually managed to get it to re-boot by running the battery down completely (just left it in the Shut Down Screen for a few hours). Then connected a charger. After a few minutes the Apple Logo appeared.

Once there, again after a few minutes, the phone responded quite happily to my finger taps or swipes.

I then noted that an update was outstanding. Now I have those set to 'Automatically Update' which it hadn't done. So therefore concluded that the phone might have been in the middle of an update process earlier which got unexpectedly interrupted and therefore caused some instability or partial loss of some ios procedure.

Impossible to know whether this was the case, but all I can say is that's it's now all good!

Thanks again.

Hey there JakeyJKP,

We'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some basics:

  1. You mentioned this occurs when you try to unlock your iPhone using a 'finger swipe', but did you mean that you tapping in your passcode doesn't register your taps on the screen? The more details you provide, the better we'll understand what's occurring.
  2. When did this start, and is there any coverings on the screen?
  3. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone

Cheers!
