iphone 15 pro automatically resize photos when taking in 16:9

Hi to everyone, I have a problem with my iPhone 15 Pro, bought and used in Italy.

Sometimes, when I take photos in 16:9 the photos are automatically resized and put in the upper left angle of the screen, while in the rest of the screen appear a black "L". When I take the photo all seems ok, but when I tap on the preview on the bottom left to open it I see the photo getting smaller, and then it remain in that way.

I've noticed that this happens frequently in the evening and in the morning (very strange!).

I did the factory reset, with and without use the iCloud backup to restore my data, but I didn't solve anything. I've also reinstalled iOS with iTunes, but nothing happened. In addition, I've already done the tests for hardware and software problems, both with telephonic assistance and in an Apple store. No obvious problems were identified, but at the Apple store they recognized my problem and gave me a new iPhone 15 Pro as a replacement. Now, I have the same problem with the new phone. I updated to iOS 17.1 but the issue still persists. Could it be a software problem? Anyone have the same issue?

Here's one of this strange resized photo:

This is happening to me as well, I have an (almost) fix. If I change the aspect ratio from 9:16 to 4:5, or shoot in portrait mode, it no longer happens. But if I go back to 16:9 it happens again.

Another, more tedious fix is to edit the photo, go to the cropping section then tap original aspect ratio, and it will snap it to a full 4:5 frame.

I have the same problem too shortly after i bought my iphone 15 pro. I restarted my phone & it seems to solve the problem. But a few days later, the problem came back again... i also notice that this problem only happens if i'm using the iphone camera app. If i used another app eg instagram to take a photo in 16:9 size, it doesnt get resize... so i feel that it might be a software issue 😮‍💨

I faced the same problem for the first time today with my iPhone 15 pro. Additionally, if I switch portrait mode on, the image gets all garbled in the area where the black L would be otherwise. Turning off portrait mode makes the image shrink back to the top left leaving the black L shape around it.

The problem went away on its own after a while and I have no idea why it happened in the first place.

I reported the problem several times to both the telephonic assistance and the Apple Store near to me. I originally wrote here because I wanted to know if the problem was just mine because the assistance told me every time I was the first one who noticed this issue. I know Apple can’t read these messages but I don’t know how to contact them directly. Unfortunately, I’ve no experience whit this. Do you know how I can leave a feedback?

Dear (?) Apple!

i’m fuming, I right now need to take square pictures with framing to be seen before I take the picture but found out it is no longer available on my new phone 15. It worked perfectly on iPhone 6.

why is this simple feature not available on this advanced phone 15? Please let me know as soon as possible how to fix it. Thank you.

after taking all the square pictures with my old iPhone 6 (!!!!!), and transferring them to my new phone. 15,

I came back and kept trying to find a possible way, and at the end I was successful, but it is not easy to find:

On top of the picture screen click little arrow on the middle to be pointing up, click it to point down now in yellow color. Then look at the screen bottom on the right size, you will see thete displayed either of 2 sizes. 16:9, or 4:3.

when you click on it, on the bottom would appear options to use either of two sizes and in the middle the is option “square”!!!!!!

I also discovered, that close by is also good option for night pictures. So it is all possible, but it’s very difficult to find it. But once you find it couple times you will get used to it.

Good luck and visit my FB profile for pictures, or if you would like to learn to play amazing Fujara with great sound which anybody can play in 5 minutes! I am on mission to give knowledge of that instrument to people in America and rest of the world . Search YouTube for “Bob Rychlik Fujara” TEDx , Library of Congress, ….
