i need to make a authorisation call with Microsoft and they are asking i press the £ key to continue but i dont see a £ key on the onscreen phone keypad , there is of course the numbers 0-9 and th # and * keys but how do i select a £ symbol

You don't. As you stated the only things that are on the keypad (during a phone call) are the ones you listed.
I suspect that the "£ key" has been incorrectly "translated/transported". I would contact Microsoft support team, explain your problem and ask them for the solution.
