Trying to encrypt Samsung SSD T7 Shield - can't choose APFS/GUID

Hi all. I have a M1 MacBook Pro 16 inch 2021, on Ventura 13.2.1.

I have read loads of threads but can't resolve the issue.

I've just bought the Samsung T7 shield and want to erase and encrypt the drive. I don't want to use the Samsung software. I believe that I need to select APFS or GUID, but this isn't an option.

When I go to erase, I can only choose from the following Formats (see pic):

-Mac OS Extended (journaled)

-Mac OS Extended (case sensitive)

-MS-DOS (FAT)

-ExFAT.

I also tried right-clicking on the drive, where it does list APFS but this doesn't work (see pics).

I'd welcome any suggestions and help.

Thank you in advance

You need to be erasing, reformatting, initializing the parent drive, not the Volume level, not the Container level
