Notepad ++ equivalent app for MacBook Pro

I'm new to Mac. Can someone suggest me the Mac version of Notepadd++ tool please.

You might consider the Apple Silicon (not the Intel or Universal) build of the free Visual Studio Code for Mac. The Notepad - Text Editor in the Mac App Store is a plain text dumb editor.

TextEdit app for Monterey? I can't find the TextEdit app for Monterey, 12.4. I've used it for years on my other operating systems. Monterey offers NotePad which I think is inferior to TextEdit. Can anyone shed light on this or am I just not looking in the right place for TextEdit for Monterey? Thanks.
